I do not know if there is an official documented media code of ethics. If not, one is needed. If one exists, it should include a position that absolutely excludes using anonymous sources in all written and broadcast reports to the public. I believe there was a time when the media did not use anonymous sources in their reporting.
These anonymous sources are either cowards unwilling to stand up and be accounted for or liars who already know that the information they are providing is untrue. In either case, anonymous source information should be suspect and not reported until someone agrees to be accountable for it.
Why the information from these questionable sources is being reported on a regular basis is a question we all should be asking ourselves. There is no answer that I am satisfied with.
