The flu epidemic has invaded 48 states, overwhelming medical facilities, exhausting vaccine supplies and killing 29 children and thousands of seniors. Both the problem and solution to this disaster hinge on how we relate to animals raised for food. Indeed, 61 percent of the 1,415 pathogens known to infect humans originate with animals. The more recent, contagious and deadly viruses among these include Asian, dengue fever, Ebola, H5N1 (bird), HIV, SARS, West Nile and yellow fever.

The pandemic “Spanish” flu of 1918, killed 20 million to 50 million people worldwide, and the World Health Organization predicts more pandemics in the future. Today’s factory farms are virtual flu factories. Sick, crowded, highly stressed animals in contact with contaminated feces and urine provide ideal incubation media for viruses. As these microbes reach humans, they mutate to defeat the new host’s immune system, then propagate by contact.

Each of us can help end animal farming and build up our own immune system against the flu by replacing animal products in our diet with vegetables, fruits and whole grains. These foods don’t carry flu viruses or government warning labels, are touted by every major health advocacy organization, and were the recommended fare in the Garden of Eden.

Your letter is more full of tofu than you are Brady. You can quote exactly 29 children have died, a long worn out liberal gimmick to get peoples attention; yet you then say thousands of senior citizens????????? Here are the true stats for the 2012-2013 flu season as reported by Center of Disease Control. It mentions nothing about thousands of seniors dying and you seem to be way off on the number of children who have died. The CDC also breaks down the origins of these different strains, and guess what Brady? Animals and food supplies are not mentioned. Heres teh site and next time berfore you try and BS people, do some research and you wont look so foolish.

I didn't read the article but every year there are statistics of people dying of the flu etc. Ginormous numbers. But if you take those numbers and divide by 50 states you have ginormous state numbers. It cracks me up when they always give those statistics but how often does anyone hear of anyone dying of the flu. The numbers seem a little wrong to me always. .

Rick Reuschel's Love Child

As clarification for the stats. The CDC keeps a separate statistic for juvenile deaths from influenza. That is the 29 cases that is currently being reported. That doesn't mean that only 29 people have died from the flu and that they are all children, it simply means that of influenza deaths, 29 have been of children. The CDC and WHO combine tracking for deaths by influenza and those by pneumonia. The same page that you cited shows that deaths by P&I account for approximately 10% of all adult deaths in cities reporting to CDC. In a typical non-flu season P&I would generally be around 6-7% of deaths, so the recent jump to 9.8% indicates a) an epidemic level has been reached and b) a significant number of adults are dying from the flu.

Sunday Supper at my place today- everyone invited! There'll be alfalfa sprouts, potato peels and an array of nettles and nut-shells. There'll also be several varieties of herbal teas for those wishing some drink . And afterward if you're too weak, weary & withered to make it to your vehicle there'll be plenty of strong sturdy escorts available to help you to your car from the barbecue next door, the fish-fry across the way, and the weenie-roast down on the corner. ;-)

earlyriser54

Hey Big Man no offense but would it be OK with you if I went noxt door to eat and then volunteered to help carry the HEALTHY FOLKS to thier cars? Great comment sir, it is right on the mark.

That'd be fine, er... not to mention kind and thoughtful. Afterall, my shin-digs always attract "sensible folk" as Jose claims above to be one of as he denounces personal choices of fat-filled greazy grub- so I predict he'll def down a belly-full of sprouts and nettles, and likely need a strong meat-eating shoulder to lean on as he witheringly hobbles his frail way out to his car! :-)

LOL Chubs!

Sweetheart, you couldn't lift me off the ground, let alone carry anything more than your own ponderous bulk, and er's claims are like he is -- toothless.

For over two decades the body of worldwide medical evidence supporting vegetarian and vegan diets has been growing, is overwhelming, and to date, is indisputable.

When your (and Jeffy's) criticisms are backed by redundant, solid, peer-reviewed research that causes organizations like the ADA, BMA, and WHO to reverse their positions, all they can do is project an attitude of "sour grapes".

Ignore the insane one who knows all and writes all, as he has no real opinion except to counter what has been written.

Controlling the food supply so it is free from pathogens is key. How many people have died from tainted lettuce and other produce? Anything can carry the seed for illness. It's not just meat.

earlyriser54

Well you have managed to be completely wrong atgain oh liberal one. I make many positive comments on letters that are from sane people. However in this case on only is the writer an ongoing food nazi who every months feels the need to remind the world that he is a vegan and they should be as well, but I quoted a site from the Center of Disease Contorl that contradicts his foolish claims. The true insanity though as I see it is after you make your little dig at me, you then go on to disagree with the author of this letter. Go figure.

Towanda I am begining to think you are a liberal stalker. I mean you seem to go out of your way to respond to my comments to others when they are totally unrelated to you. And apparently you missed out on the verse that said toward the end times many will avoid eating meat and not to upset anyone but many will also go to homosexual lifestyles. I am not defending them at all I am just saying that is what is written. And what gripes me a lot is when pious people rant and rave about what is in the Bible but they obviously don't know everything that is in there either. The main one being how you treat others is one of the most important things in the Bible. All self proclaimed righties worry about that often don't they? And one person I know, when she gets in her religion mode, posts prayers and allegiance on facebook for all to see. However, you are to pray in secret. Apparently that isn't something she read yet I guess. There is so much there but so much overlooked. In fact and it is hard to do but in the Bible it says not to get in foolish arguments and discussions. Oh what a different world we would have if everyone did what they were "supposed to do." Especially the Christians.

And then there is the water supply. Think of the water reclamation districts. Makes you want to run out and take a sip doesn't it?

Just an update confirming same: NEW YORK (AP) — A big government study has fingered leafy greens like lettuce and spinach as the leading source of food poisoning, a perhaps uncomfortable conclusion for health officials who want us to eat our vegetables.

"Most meals are safe," said Dr. Patricia Griffin, a government researcher and one of the study's authors who said the finding shouldn't discourage people from eating produce. Experts repeated often-heard advice: Be sure to wash those foods or cook them thoroughly.

Lets get real, what is different now than 20-30 years ago? Everything is antibacterial years go people got sick for a few days, building there immune system. Now everyone uses antibacterial everything wreaking their immune since they don't get the small flus. When they get the flu now it destroys the host since everyone immune s are week

Cynical citizen

Funny how flu cases become copious only after people start receiving its alleged vaccine.

Rick Reuschel's Love Child

I'm curious why you call it an alleged vaccine? Peer-reviewed papers from scientists with no financial interest in the vaccines have shown that people receiving the vaccine are at a significantly lower risk of contracting the disease. Likewise, they show that those receiving the vaccine demonstrate significantly stronger immune response to the virus. So both epidemiology studies as well as supportive mechanisms have supported that the influenza vaccine is effective. Is it perfect, no. No vaccine is. Do some people have noticeable side effects, absolutely, including me. The fact that it isn't perfect doesn't mean that it isn't better than nothing.

Some of the so-called "foods" out there SHOULD carry warning labels!

I agree with most of what you say, Braden. More importantly, though, is KNOWING what is in the food we eat. If my grandmother wouldn't recognize the substance as food, I figure I won't eat it.

Besides, who needs to fill our GOD-GIVEN bodies with chemicals most can't even pronounce, let alone understand what they are and what they do? Obviously, the curmudgeonly nay-sayers constantly whining here have ignored Genesis, and God's statements: 'And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." '

Apparently, those of us sensible folk missed out the verse about eating barbecue, greasy fried foods and unrecognizable animal bits blended with chemicals.

I don't know Griz, I must admit that Bill Clinton is looking much healthier these days now that he is conforming to a vegan diet. I think that biggest mistakes most vegetarians make is that they fail to follow a diet capable of providing all of the nutrients that their bodies need. Meat eaters who decide to turn vegan really ought to seek the advice of a good nutritionist before making the switch.

He looks healthy? Honestly- I've thought the opposite a lot these last few years. Thinner- yes. And that's good. But tired, drained and worn. In ways a mere shadow.

Watch or read Forks over Knives. Great info on exactly what this letter writer is talking about. But then most people that want to disagree with this wont bother...

One theory of the source of the 1918 flu pandemic is it mutated from a chicken farm near Fort Riley, Kansas. The soldiers based there were sent to Europe to fight in WWI. They traveled to the East Coast before sailing overseas. In the process they contaminated people along the way. The reason it was called "Spanish" is because Spain documented and researched the flu so well they mistakenly got blamed for it by some. It was also known as the "Irish" flu also, because some of he earliest cases were seen in Ireland.

There is a point in investigating food poisoning in modern meat factories. The consolidation of the food industry is creating a situation where contaminated food is distributed so far and fast the CDC can't deal with it effectively. No animal should have to live it's existence covered in the waste of themselves and others. Besides, in processing the meat, how are we guaranteed that urine, feces, and the bacteria it produces doesn't end up being digested by us? If the industry doesn't correct itself, one way to avoid poisoning ourselves is becoming vegan. I for one am not ready for that at this time.

Outstanding post.

Part of the problem w/ this letter- and many letters.... these comments and many comments...

...is that too many people insist their way is the right way- that others' choices are lesser choices, and that alternate thoughts are substandard thoughts.

To many people instead of sharing information and experiences, opt to assert against and demean others in their efforts to get their points listened to.

That's a very clear aspect in the case of this letter and discussion- and those about everything from elections to gun control and all issues- political and otherwise.

During the summer I got very sick eating a melon. Listeria and I believe salmonella was in the melons. Melon is not an animal. What bothers me most I guess is the Bible predicts that in the end times society will become more vegetarian. I know we can't really do anything about that but it is sad to see that transpire.

Jose
Jose

You might have been sick from the melon (e. coli or listeria being the most likely culprits), but it wasn't the flu.

There is no reason (aside from choice) to eat meat or NOT eat meat, to eat veges and fruits or NOT eat veges and fruits.

Part of the problem seems to be the lay community's lack of understanding about the causes of disease and common misnomers, which can be remedied by basic science. Learning the differences between bacteria, viruses, parasites and chemicals can go a long way toward understanding ailments, and how they spread.

For example, "stomach flu" is NOT a flu, because flu (influenza) is a virus. "Stomach flu" is most likely bacterial in origin, given its common, unpleasant GI symptoms and length of incubation.

Eating meat will not "cause" flu any more than eating vegetables will "cause" e. coli. How often do we hear of "strawberry flu" or "mad tomato disease"?

However, you meat-eaters can take solace in the fact that your ol' pal Chimpy made meat-eating "safe" for you by allowing the FDA to spray live viruses onto meat and poultry products. Feel better?

Personally, I've found that limiting meat consumption has resulted in a 16 point drop in my total cholesterol, a 13 pound drop in body weight, and a considerable savings in the household budget. Of course, HDCV isn't cheap, but hey, them's the breaks when you gotta travel.

ChubbyAlaskaGriz

As with all posts he places at every letter and article what know-it-all Jose means by "lay community" is- anyone that's not HIM.

Not to be too picky, so Grizz gets after me, but could you speak to the peanut disaster a couple years ago, and the European illness from those greens from there in 2009 or 10?

Rick Reuschel's Love Child

Actually, according to CDC surveys the majority of cases of acute gastroenteritis in the US are caused by viruses with noroviruses being the most common. Bacteria are most common with water-borne AGE, but viruses account for the most common causative agents in both food-borne and person-person transmission mechanisms.
