URBANA -- The University of Illinois says a student found bed bugs in a dorm room over the weekend, but school officials believe the problem was confined to a single room.

Erin Ciciora, spokeswoman for University Housing, told The Champaign News-Gazette the room in Evans Hall was closed off Sunday night after the report and exterminators went to work.

She said none of the parasitic bugs were found in nearby rooms but students were moved out as a precaution.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Director Julie Pryde said bed bugs aren't harmful but are very difficult to get rid of.

Bed bugs feed on the blood of people and animals. The small, flat insects spread when carried out of one location on luggage, furniture or other objects.
