March 5, 1918: Bridegrooms who register for the draft can expect to be asked, “How long did you know your wife?” Also where they were married, whether they live together and whether she can support herself. The idea is to weed out phonies who are seeking draft exemptions.

March 5, 1943: News is just reaching Bloomington that Staff Sgt. O.A. Luallen was killed in New Guinea on Dec. 15. His mother, Mrs. G.E. Wright, lives outside of town. He had worked for the Illinois Iowa Power Company and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941.

March 5, 1968: Charles Baugh has been elected mayor of Normal, beating incumbent Charles Spear and Councilman Hal Riss, who still has two years left on his council term. An ex-cop from Springfield, Baugh said he would hold off on naming priorities of his administration.

March 5, 1993: Donish Adkins, Nick Waterson and Jeff Bicknell, all BHS students, rescued a fourth student from drowning in the deep end of the swimming pool. Freshman Saheed Ayinde Alliu was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. BHS has suspended swim classes.
