100 years ago

May 8, 1918: An elevator accident at My Store has left E.L. Shaffer, an employee, fighting for his life. He’s new at the store and may have become confused while trying to operate the elevator. He suffered a fractured skull and a broken chest bone. (He died a week later.)

75 years ago

May 8, 1943: Authorities arrested Howard Raboin and put him in the Livingston County jail. Raboin is charged with embezzling $93,615 from the Farmers State Bank in Cullom, where he was the cashier. He was supposed to put up $5,000 bond but didn’t, so he was arrested.

50 years ago

May 8, 1968: The old Jordan’s Texaco station, a long-standing Normal landmark at 1200 S. Main St., came tumbling down to make way for progress. A new building will be put up behind where the station stood. Phil Jordan took over the site from Meredith White’s widow in 1957.

25 years ago

May 8, 1993: Julio Gallo, spokesman for the wine company he and his brother own, was killed while driving on his own ranch east of San Francisco. Authorities said Gallo, 83, lost control of his new Jeep Wrangler and it went down a 30-foot embankment.
