The Feb. 27 headline read: Council raises fee for trash collection. It should have read: Council takes first big step toward fiscally responsible budget.
I was a part of group of citizens who spent several months reviewing the budget at the request of Alderman Diana Hauman. One of our principles was that services and programs need to support themselves based on their dedicated revenue sources. Trash stood out as one of the largest offenders, running a $1 million-plus annual deficit. That’s not sustainable or fiscally responsible.
Further, bi-weekly bulk pickup service is more generous than most communities in the country. If we wanted to keep this luxurious service, we needed to pay for it.
The council’s decision to increase fees and reduce service will not be popular, but it was necessary. Thank you, council members, for having the courage to make this though decision. I look forward to seeing more bold solutions in the coming months.
