How would you feel if over the last 25 years you had not received an across-the-board pay increase? Almost unthinkable, but that is the situation with substitute teachers in both Unit 5 and District 87. Other school districts in the area pay up to $100 and over while Unit 5 and District 87 substitutes are held to $80 a day. In addition, there is a substantial outlay of money, over several hundred dollars, to become certified.
Every year teachers, administrators, support and bus drivers receive a pay increase because they are organized. This is not the case with substitutes so the school board has chosen to ignore these people, valuable to the smooth operation of schools on a daily basis. I think it is time those affected start contacting their respective school boards and ask for immediate pay raises to reflect the valuable contribution they make to the school day.
