NORMAL - Bobby Hill's career as an Illinois State basketball player has been put on hold.

Hill, a 6-foot-6 forward who started eight games as a freshman for the Redbirds last season, will transfer to Lincoln College for the 2007-08 season, ISU coach Tim Jankovich announced Monday night.

Hill will play for the Lynx with hopes of returning to ISU a year from now.

"Coach Jankovich, my dad and I are all in agreement that this is what is best for me," said Hill, who has played summer pick-up games at ISU this summer. "I love Illinois State and have every intention of returning next year."

ISU will have to re-sign Hill to a national letter of intent in November.

Hill played in 26 of ISU's 31 games last season and averaged 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds in 11.1 minutes per game. He shot 41.5 percent from the field and 82.1 percent at the free throw line. Hill showed the ability to guard several different positions on defense thanks to his quickness and long arms.

"This is not the story of a young man who failed to take care of his responsibilities, nor of someone who gave anything less than his best," said Jankovich, who was named ISU's coach on March 20. "I am very proud of Bobby, and together, we have a plan for his long-term success.

"After a short time away, I believe Bobby's best days are ahead of him. I hope when all is said and done, this will be a great story to tell and serve as an inspiration to others."

As a senior at Vashon High School in St. Louis, Hill helped the team to the Class 4A state title. He was runner-up for Missouri Mr. Basketball.

Hill's departure will leave the Redbirds with seniors Levi Dyer and Anthony Slack, juniors Mike Vandello and Brandon Sampay and sophomore redshirt Dinma Odiakosa in the front court for the upcoming season.
