NCHS wins at Lincoln

Senior outside hitter Jenny Sandel registered 10 kills and 10 digs to lead the Normal Community High School volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-18 nonconference win over host Lincoln on Thursday.

Nicki Gerig dished out 23 assists for NCHS (21-2) while Rachel Feldman had seven service points for the Ironmen.

"We started out a little slow in the first game, but then our offense began to connect," said NCHS coach Andrea Kenny. "Menendez and (Jenny) Sandel were strong on the outside for us and we got consistent play all around."

Bloomington cruises

Alli Kirk had 16 service points and Kristin Stauter added 18 assists as Bloomington improved to 24-2 overall and 6-1 in league play with an easy 25-7, 25-10 victory over Decatur Eisenhower in a Big 12 match at Decatur.

Ashley Beyer added five kills and five digs for the Raiders while Illinois-Chicago basketball recruit Kristin Petrinec led BHS with six kills. Lisa Bogle also had five digs for the Raiders.

"I thought the kids played fine and stayed focused, which is important in an easy match," said BHS coach Joe Sanders. "They got it done quickly."

Saints outlast Eureka

Nicole Henson recorded nine service points, including two aces, and had seven digs to lead host Central Catholic to a 25-16, 25-22 Corn Belt Conference victory over Eureka.

Central Catholic (14-10, 8-2) got a match-high 12 kills from Megan Schmidt while Kristyn Mysker handed out nine assists for the Saints.

"We played a good match," said Central Catholic coach Emily Kabbes. "We started out strong, which gave us the chance to take a look at a lot of different players."

U High clips Pontiac

Sophomore outside hitter Bridget Lam had seven service points, five kills and one block as the Pioneers defeated Pontiac, 25-10, 25-21, in a Corn Belt match at Normal.

U High improved to 15-10 overall and 9-1 in league play while Pontiac dropped to 9-12, 3-7.

Pioneers' freshman Maggie Bee contributed 12 assists.

Ashley Timmerman had four kills and five blocks to lead Pontiac. Jamie Petersen finished with five service points, while Amy Kennedy added eight assists for the Indians.

"I thought we came out really strong, but had the typical game two letdown," said U High coach Cathy Sanders. "We had a hard time getting in our groove in the second game, but we kept our composure and turned it around."

West edges Urbana

Jenn Haar dished out 19 assists and Liz Heineman had 16 digs as Normal West outlasted Big 12 foe Urbana, 25-22, 25-22, in a conference match at Urbana.

The Wildcats got eight service points, including two aces, from Kelsey Detweiler and seven blocks from Lisa Wagoner.

West improved to 5-1 in conference action and 15-9 overall.
