NORMAL - The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams combined for 10 event wins in the indoor season-opening Redbird Open at Horton Field House Saturday where no team scores were kept.
"I am proud of our team's performance today," said ISU coach Elvis Forde. "We have had great camaraderie all year long, and I think that the level of competitiveness has risen (throughout the fall). The freshmen that we brought in have made our returnees raise their level of performance."
Men
The ISU men were led by double winner Jeremy Johnson in the 60-meter dash (6.90 seconds) and 200 (22.44). Teammate DeAndre Tillman took first in the 400 (50.50) and ran on the winning 1,600 relay (3:23.35) with Anthony Jacks, Carl Azab and Dan Murphy.
ISU's T.J. Fakihinde and Alex Straughn tied for first in the high jump (6-7¾). Drew Holl took third (6-4) and Robert Kamentseve tied for fourth (6-4). Samuel Watts long jumped a winning 23-9½.
Redbird Anton Walczak finished second in the weight throw (55-8¼) while Bryan Chancellor took third (55-7). Tristan Walczak took second in the 60 (7.00).
Women
Among the women's winners were sophomore transfer Megan Thompson in the 60-meter hurdles (8.99 seconds), senior Anna Lovell in the 400 (58.10) and the 1,600 relay team of Meaka Brents, Tia Harvey, Thompson and Lovell (4:02.67).
ISU senior Devon Williams, who competed unattached, won the 60 (7.52) and 200 (25.10).
Redbird senior Frannie Epps of Gibson City took in second in the hurdles (9.06). Teammate Caitlin Roberts was third in the high jump (5-6). Samantha Springer of Tremont took fourth in the 20-pound weight throw (52-10) and shot put (43-7).
Redbird Yomeaqua Brents took third in the 60 (7.65) and the 200 (25.97).
Central Catholic graduate Amy Schmitz, competing unattached, placed third in the weight throw (58-1) and fifth in the shot put (42-0). Pontiac's Ashley Butler of Lewis won the long jump (17-2¼).
ISU will be back in action Jan. 12 at home against Indiana State.
Combest a no show
Casey Combest of Henderson, Ky., the subject of a Pantagraph feature story Friday, did not compete after injuring a leg muscle Friday in a meet at Carbondale.
Combest placed third in his 60 heat Friday in 7.27 seconds to rank 26th out of 41 entrants. He ran well through 40 meters before pulling up.
