CHAMPAIGN - Senior safety Justin Harrison of Bloomington was among three winners of the Bruce Capel Award on Saturday night at the University of Illinois' annual football banquet.
Harrison, snapper Kyle Knezetic and fullback Russ Weil shared the Capel Award, which goes to the Illini player who displays the most courage and dedication.
Two years ago, doctors believed a hip injury might end Harrison's career. He underwent three surgeries and a difficult recovery, but worked his way back on the field and has been a four-year starter for the Rose Bowl-bound Illini.
Junior running back Rashard Mendenhall was named the team's most valuable player, while receiver Arrelious Benn and linebacker Martez Wilson shared rookie of the year honors.
