Five area teams advance at state volleyball

Chiddix got eight service points and four aces from Mary Trimpe en route a 21-19, 21-8 win over Mattoon in opening round play of the Illinois Elementary School Association 8AA state tournament on Saturday at Stephen Decatur Middle School in Decatur. Lexi Cessna added seven service points and an ace for the Chargers (21-4) who will meet Quincy in a quarterfinal match at 7:15 p.m. on Monday.

In other matches involving area schools, Illini Central got past Champaign Jefferson, 21-15, 21-16; and PBL lost 22-20, 13-21, 21-7 to Arlington Heights South.

Illini Central (18-6), which won the Class 7AA state title last week, used 14 service points from Julie Shelabarger, five points from Stephanie Neikirk and five from Taylor Sisk. The Cougars will meet Herscher Limestone at 6 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals.

PBL, which finished at 17-5, was led by Amanda Sheen (eight points, three aces) and Taylor Rubarts and Maisie Swanson (five points each).

Class 8A

Pontiac St. Mary's, Mount Pulaski and Lexington all claimed first-round victories at Central Catholic High School.

St. Mary's topped Mazon-Verona-Kinsman, 21-10, 21-12, while Mount Pulaski outlasted Albion, 21-9, 14-21, 21-17.

Sydney Benning served 11 points, including six aces, and Jackie Ralph and Kathy Fornero each added five points for St. Mary's (15-7), which will play Pawnee (19-4) at 4:45 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals.

Mount Pulaski got nine points from Tiffany Parrish and seven each from Brooke Merold and Ashley Southerlan. The Honeybears (25-1) will take on Jacksonville Our Savior (24-1) at 6 p.m. Monday.

Lexington advanced to the quarterfinals with a 21-17, 21-10 opening round win over Bement. Emily Davis had 11 service points to lead the Minutemen who will face Peoria Limestone (24-1) at 7:15 p.m. Monday.
