U High teams coast to Livingston golf titles
The University High School boys and girls golf teams shot identical rounds of 307 to run away with the team titles in Thursday's Livingston County Invitational at Wolf Creek Golf Course in Cayuga.
U High's boys claimed a 20-shot victory over Kankakee Bishop McNamara behind Sean Dozier and Kyle English, who tied for first at 4-over-par 76. Dozier earned medalist honors after winning a scorecard playoff.
Central Catholic finished third in the 11-team field with a 330 and was followed by Fieldcrest (333) and Pontiac (347). Lee Hogan of Pontiac and U High's Peter McKinzie both fired 78s, while U High's Logan Stauffer rounded out the top five with a 78.
U High's girls posted a 46-shot win over Normal Community (353) by sweeping the top five individual places, led by medalist Kaitlyn Wampler who fired a 74.
Chelsea Harris added a 75 for U High, Lauren English shot a 77, Janelle Galloway carded an 81 and Cheryl Liang posted an 82.
Central Catholic (372), Normal West (382) and Bishop McNamara (385) completed the top five. NCHS' Brittany Boon finished sixth with an 83, and Tabby Bell paced Central Catholic with an 84.
VOLLEYBALL
Saints topple Mahomet
Shelby Wheeler attacked from the service line with 15 points and four aces, while Megan Schmidt had 10 kills to lead Central Catholic (7-2, 3-0) to a 25-16, 17-25, 25-16 Corn Belt win over host Mahomet-Seymour (13-3, 3-1).
Senior Kristyn Mysker had 16 assists for the Saints, and Nicole Henson and Mysker both collected 10 digs.
Mel Weimer contributed 20 assists, for the Bulldogs, and Greta Goddard added eight kills.
West crushes Eisenhower
Chelsea Myers had a team-high six kills, and Erin McGinnis and Ali Stover added four each as Normal West rolled to a 25-7, 25-13 Big 12 Conference win over Decatur Eisenhower at Normal.
Kelsey Detweiler collected 14 digs for West (5-5, 1-2), and Kiley Sturm had nine service points, including two aces, and 13 assists.
U High bests Eureka
Bridget Lam had six service points, including three aces, as University High breezed to a 25-13, 25-12 Corn Belt Conference victory over host Eureka.
Maggie Bee handed out 13 assists for U High (7-2, 3-0) while Taylor Bruns registered seven kills and Ashlee Sang had six digs. Chelsea Prosser led Eureka (2-3, 1-3) with four kills and one block.
Ironmen slam Glenwood
Jackie Gerig had 12 assists, 11 service points and four aces to pace Normal Community (5-0) to a 25-21, 25-18 nonconference win over Chatham Glenwood at Normal.
Taylor Coughlin and Paige Lay led NCHS' offensive attack with a combined 17 kills.
Rachel Feldman and Jenny Menendez both added 10 digs.
Prairie Central triumphs
Prairie Central beat Pontiac 21-25, 27-25, 25-22 behind 13 kills from Kenber Galloway at Pontiac.
Kari Diller collected 28 assists for Prairie Central (4-7, 1-3).
Tremont stops Ridgeview
Lindsey Watson had seven kills and six service points to lead Tremont to a 25-11, 25-9 Heart of Illinois Conference win against Ridgeview.
Janelle Barrow dished out 20 assists and added six service points for the Turks (5-6, 3-1).
Perschnick sparks Dwight
Carly Perschnick hammered 14 kills, recorded eight service points, including three aces, and put up three blocks as Dwight outlasted Reed-Custer, 25-22, 25-17, in an Interstate Eight Conference contest at Dwight.
Amie Hogan handed out 18 assists for Dwight (5-5, 2-2), while Stephanie Humbert added eight service points, three blocks and two kills.
Clinton falls to Central A&M
Despite 25 digs from Shelby Huffman, Clinton dropped a 26-24, 25-20 decision to Central A&M in Okaw Valley play at Clinton.
Sarah Blythe had 17 digs and five kills for Clinton (5-9, 0-1) while Jessica Smith added 12 digs and five kills.
El Paso-Gridley prevails
Mattie Fairchild dished out 13 assists and nailed five kills as El Paso-Gridley cruised to a 25-15, 25-15 Heart of Illinois Conference win over Blue Ridge at El Paso.
Kindi Bullard had nine service points and two blocks for EPG (10-2, 3-0). Danielle Thompson led Blue Ridge (4-10, 2-2) with 12 assists.
Olympia nips Rantoul
Olympia used a balanced attack to outlast Rantoul, 25-22, 25-18, in Corn Belt Conference play at Stanford.
Elizabeth Alberts handed out 14 assists, Jacie Eichelberger had eight service points and Kelsey Heiser recorded 12 digs for Olympia (12-3, 3-1). Lydia Schmidgall registered six kills and two blocks for the Spartans.
Dee-Mack outlasts Fieldcrest
Katie Poorbaugh racked up 31 assists and 14 service points to help Deer Creek-Mackinaw post a 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 Heart of Illinois Conference win over Fieldcrest at Mackinaw.
The Chiefs (9-1) also received 15 kills from Haley Thurmond. Kayla Conroy had 19 assists and 10 service points for Fieldcrest (5-2).
Bonaparte leads Lincoln
Ashley Bonaparte had 12 service points, including two aces, and eight assists as Lincoln defeated host Urbana, 25-13, 25-18, in a non-conference contest.
Jamie McFadden had seven kills and three blocks while Abbie Feldman and Ashley Meyrick recorded five each for the Railsplitters (9-6). Samantha Lowman chipped in 13 digs for Lincoln.
Mount Pulaski wins
Morgan Litterly had seven kills, Kassi Schmidt added six and Kaitlyn Kutz chipped in five as Mount Pulaski topped Auburn, 28-26, 25-17, at Mount Pulaski. Jeri Kay Turner had 16 assists for the Hilltoppers.
PBL serves up win
Jessica Bender recorded 18 service points in PBL's 20-25, 25-17, 30-28 Sangamon Valley Conference win over Clifton Central at Paxton. Jenna Seibring added 13 kills and two blocks for PBL (2-3, 2-1).
St. Joe beats Iroquois West
Christine Eshleman and Jackie Zachgo combined for 14 digs In Iroquois West's 25-14, 25-13 Sangamon Valley Conference loss to St. Joseph-Ogden at Gilman.
SOCCER
BHS edges Champaign
Junior Danny Wright took advantage of a second half penalty kick to score the winning goal for Bloomington (4-3-1, 3-0) in a 1-0 Big 12 win over Champaign Central (5-2) at Bloomington.
Bloomington was awarded a penalty kick when midfielder Ben Hanson was pushed inside Central's penalty area just four minutes into the second half. Wright then connected for the game winner. BHS goalie Shailer Thomas had seven saves.
NCHS beats Mount Zion
Sophomore Sam Napolitano netted a goal in the 19th minute to lift Normal Community (1-3-5) to a 1-0 road victory over Mount Zion.
