University of Illinois defensive coordinator Vince Okruch has taken a temporary leave of absence from the Fighting Illini football team.
"Vince has decided to take a leave of absence from the staff, which is something he feels is best for him personally," Illinois head coach Ron Zook said in a statement. "We appreciate the leadership and guidance that Vince provided the team last season."
Assistants Dan Disch and Curt Mallory have been promoted to fill Okruch's role as co-defensive coordinators.
"Both Dan and Curt have been with this program since our day one," Zook said. "They have been primed for these positions, and I trust them whole-heartedly."
Disch has 20 years of coaching experience, including 16 as a head coach at the high school level calling defenses. He will continue coaching the linebackers.
Mallory is heading into his 13th season as a defensive secondary coach.
The Illini open the season Sept. 1 in St. Louis against Missouri.
