Heyworth 40, Tri-Valley 0
Nick Law scored four touchdowns and Nathan Spaulding added a game-high 152 yards rushing and a touchdown as the Heyworth High School football team used a dominating rushing attack to defeat Tri-Valley 40-0 in a Heart of Illinois Conference game at Downs on Friday night.
The win improved the Hornets to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the league. Tri-Valley fell to 1-6, 0-6.
Law opened the scoring with a 77-yard punt return to give Heyworth a 7-0 lead. He later added touchdown runs of one and six yards and caught a 20-yard touchdown toss from Nick Kronmiller as the Hornets built a 27-0 lead by halftime.
Spaulding carried only six times but one was good for 81 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter. Kronmiller completed the rout with a 9-yard run in the third period.
Heyworth gained 354 of its 386 total yards via the run. Junior Jacob Underwood chipped in 108 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Tri-Valley was held to 119 yards rushing and 25 yards passing. Chris Asmar had a team-high 58 yards rushing on 13 carries for the Vikings. Seth Wagner added 46 yards on 15 tries.
Flanagan-Woodland 40, EPG 7
Junior running back Aaron Willis ran for 257 yards and five touchdowns as Flanagan-Woodland locked up a playoff berth with a victory over El Paso-Gridley in a conference game at El Paso.
The win, coupled with a Ridgeview loss and GCMS win, pushed Flanagan, 6-1 overall, into a three-way tie for first place in the league standings with Ridgeview and GCMS at 5-1.
Upset-minded El Paso-Gridley (1-6, 1-5) grabbed a 7-0 lead by scoring onits first possession. Adam Reel plunged over from one yard out.
From that point on, it was the Aaron Willis show.
Willis, who carried the ball 37 times, scored on runs of two yards in the first quarter and 4, 14 and 7 yards, respectively, in the second period to give Flanagan a 26-7 advantage at halftime. The Falcons took advantage of two fumble recoveries and an interception in limiting EPG to a total of six offensive plays in the first half.
Willis capped his big night with a 64-yard scoring sprint in the third quarter to all but seal the win. Keith Funk, who added 57 yards rushing, completed the scoring for the Falcons with a one yard run in the final period.
Flanagan quarterback David Harnish completed four of four passes for 64 yards, three of those went to Alex Detwiler for 56 yards.
EPG was held to 157 total yards. Titan quarterback Jordan McKinsey completed 5 of 11 passes for 91 yards. Jeremy Balf caught three passes for 49 yards.
Tremont 44, Dee-Mack 0
Senior quarterback Jake Szetela ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as Tremont (4-3, 4-3) kept its playoff hopes alive with a conference victory at Tremont.
Szetela helped Tremont to a 14-0 first-quarter lead with touchdown runs of 27 and 7 yards. He added a 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter to finish with 106 yards rushing on 11 carries.
Szetela added 137 yards passing, including scoring tosses of 33 yards to Ben Martin and 12 yards to David Gray in the second period as the Turks took a commanding 30-0 lead in at halftime.
Martin led all ballcarriers with 156 yards on 16 rushes. Bo VanRheeden had a 3-yard touchdown run in the final period to complete the scoring for the Turks, who gained 345 yards on the ground. Placekicker Luke Hansen contributed a 41-yard field goal in the second quarter and made good on five of six conversion kicks.
The Tremont defense limited Deer Creek-Mackinaw (2-5, 2-4) to 213 total yards, 136 rushing. Senior linebacker Eric Wildermuth anchored the Turk defense with 11 solo tackles and five assists. Isaac Schafer added seven solos and six assists.
Josh Frahm paced Dee-Mack with 83 yards on 14 carries. Chief quarterback Jeff Hendricks completed 7 of 18 passes for 77 yards.
Fisher 19, Blue Ridge 7
Colten Unzicker rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns as Fisher (4-3, 3-3) held off Blue Ridge in conference action at Farmer City.
Unzicker, who carried 16 times, scored on runs of six yards in the first quarter and 10 yards in the second quarter to help Fisher grab a 13-7 halftime advantage.
"We were a little sloppy in the first half,'' Fisher coach Matt Leng. "We played with more intensity in the second half. Give Blue Ridge credit - they played very well."
Josh Ingold (4 carries, 49 yards) produced the only points in the second half with a 24-yard scoring burst in the final period to seal the win for the Bunnies.
Mahx Godin gave the Blue Ridge fans a thrill with an 84-yard kick return for touchdown for the Knight's only score. Godin led the Knights (0-7, 0-6) in rushing with 43 yards on 22 tries.
Fisher's defensive effort was keyed by Cody Thomas' three interceptions. Jacob Wallick added three tackles for loss and Justin Hadler had six solo tackles.
Arthur 24, Lexington 21
Despite Alex Tanney's 329 yards passing, Lexington dropped a nonconference decision to Arthur at Lovington.
Lexington (4-3) took a 7-0 first quarter lead when Ryan Hanes scored on a 5-yard run. Tanney threw his first touchdown pass of the night, finding Ben Winterland with a 14-yard strike to up the Minutemen margin to 14-0 in the second period.
Arthur (6-1) responded with two Jake Yoder touchdown passes, the first a 13-yarder to Alec Daily with 34 seconds left in the half, and on a 4-yard toss to Nick Coleman with 15 seconds to go to knot the contest at 14-14 at the half. Lexington mishandled a kickoff return prior to the last score.
"We gave up two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first half and that changed the complexion of the game," said Lexington coach Don Tanney.
"Credit Arthur for making plays at critical times. We had opportunities and didn't capitalize, but it wasn't from a lack of effort. We competed hard."
Arthur took a 17-14 third quarter lead when Seth Boddy hit a 26-yard field goal. Lexington struck back when Tanney hooked up with Cody Leigh on a 14-yard pass to give the lead back to the Minutemen at 21-17 going into the final period.
Yoder threw his third TD of the evening, hitting Kody Smith with a 34-yarder to give the Knights the lead for good. Yoder finished 14-for-23 with 203 yards and three touchdowns.
Tanney connected on 30 of 47 attempts for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Tanney also rushed for 33 yards while Hanes had 50 yards on 16 carries. Eric Schuler caught 15 passes for 102 yards while Leigh had eight catches for 76 yards.
