NORMAL - Critics of the Rockford Keith School volleyball team can say it's a one-woman squad all they want. Coach Tammi Haverly knows the truth. | Photo gallery
"I don't think there is a coach here, if they had her as a weapon, they wouldn't use that weapon," said Haverly after her daughter, Jordan, blasted 17 kills in a 25-19, 25-21 Class 1A state tournament semifinal win over Albion Edwards County Friday at Redbird Arena.
"It takes more than one. If we can't get the ball to our hitters, we can't do anything."
The Lady Cougars got the ball to the 6-foot-1 Jordan Haverly, a Nebraska recruit, for 35 swings. Teammate Gina Pernaacciaro received 24 sets and put down eight kills.
The outcome put Keith School (37-4) in today's 10:30 a.m. final opposite Mount Pulaski (26-14).
"Mount Pulaski, they are down here all the time," Tammi Haverly said. "They play a lot of 3A and 4A schools. It's going to be a good match."
Edwards County (34-6), which faces Deer Creek-Mackinaw (33-5) for third place at 9:30 a.m. today, outblocked Keith School, 6-0, but was aced seven times.
"(Haverly) is probably the best hitter we've seen all year," said Edwards County coach Linda Oxby Brown, whose team got five kills apiece from Jessica Knackmuhs and Chelsea Bowe.
