A sub-par putting day couldn't prevent the Illinois Wesleyan women's golf team from grabbing a four-shot lead in the first round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Friday at Bloomington's Prairie Vista Golf Course.

The Titans shot 333 on the par-72 course while second-place Augustana fired a 337. Today's final round begins at 10 a.m.

Augustana's Danielle Detelich is the leading individual at 78, one shot ahead of IWU's Taylor Paskell and Millikin's Lydia Lindemann. The Titans' Andrea Johanns is fourth at 83.

Other IWU entrants are Kristi Katz (85), Alison Mayer (86) and Lindsey Haines (91).

"Our putting stunk today," said IWU coach Kathy Niepagen. "If we play our average putts, we are 12 shots better.

"We played on the greens all this week. They rolled them and double cut them and we did not adjust at all. We were hoping we would have a more commanding lead than we have."

At stake for today's winner for the first time is an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament next spring in Florida.

Tennis team in third

After the first day of the CCIW Women's Tennis Tournament at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, IWU is in third place with 20 points. Carthage and Wheaton share the lead with 42.

Augustana is in fourth (18) followed by Elmhurst (12), Millikin (6) and North Central (4).

IWU had no semifinal winners in singles Friday.

Playing for third today will be Titans Allison Heim at No. 1, Sandy Tobik at No. 2, Kristina Sawyer at No. 3, Sarah Rusch at No. 4, Harley Culbertson at No. 5 and Colleen McShane at No. 6.

IWU's only doubles qualifiers for today semifinals were Heim and Sawyer at No. 1.
