CCHS shuts out Heyworth

Central Catholic High School sophomore Andrew Tank recorded two goals in the first half to lead the Saints past Heyworth, 4-0, in a nonconference soccer match at Bloomington Saturday.

Brian Trainor contributed a goal and an assist for Central (9-8-1). Jacob Herr accounted for the Saints' last goal in the second half. Central had 21 shots on goal compared to three for Heyworth.

"It was difficult to play the Hornets because it seemed they were defending with all 11 guys," Central coach Sebastian Heiduschke said. "Our team didn't play as well as we did our last game. Overall, we still have a lot of improving to do before the playoffs."

BHS garners second

Bloomington senior Dennis Koth scored three goals as the Raiders reached the championship game of the Jacksonville Challenge Cup Saturday before losing in an overtime shootout against the Crimsons at Jacksonville.

"We had a really good weekend," Bloomington coach Tony Bauman said. "We won this tournament last year, so I am very pleased we were able to get to the championship game. Jacksonville is a very good team and even though the overtime shootout was tough way to end the game, it was good practice for us heading into the tournament."

In the championship match, Bloomington and Jacksonville played to a scoreless tie in regulation before the Crimsons took the penalty kick shootout 4-1 and captured the tournament title.

Raider sophomore goalie Shailer Thomas recorded eight saves, but Bloomington only managed five shots on goal in regulation.

The Raiders defeated Galesburg 1-0 on a Koth free kick goal in their first match of the afternoon. Bloomington only allowed two shots on goal to the Silver Streaks.

In the semi-final match, Koth and Christian Manriquez each had two goals en route to a 5-0 Raiders victory over Taylorville. Mike Iverson chipped in a goal for Bloomington.

Taylorville mustered only four shots on goal, while the Raiders had 11. Bloomington is now 8-8-2 this season, and has two more regular season contests before the playoffs.

U High 4, Mahomet 0

University High might have been tired, but the Pioneers took a 3-0 halftime lead and cruised past Mahomet-Seymour at Mahomet.

The Pioneers (13-2-4) were playing their seventh game of the week and coming off an emotional 1-1 tie against Peoria Notre Dame on Thursday.

"It was not the game we played when we played Notre Dame. You have to expect there is a physical letdown (after seven games in a week)," said U High coach Bodo Fritzen. "It takes a lot out of the guys. It was important for the kids to keep momentum going. It was not the best game we played, but it was a win."

Zach Wall, Josh Rule and Clint Vatterrodt scored in the first half for U High, with Phil Hamilton adding the final goal in the second hald. Wall and Rule also had assists.

U High had 16 shots on goal, while Mahomet-Seymour (4-13) had two. Cole Wardlow made two saves for U High.
