Tremont 35, Fisher 7
Jake Szetela ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and J.D. VanRheeden rushed for two more as Tremont High School helped its bid for a playoff spot with a convincing 35-7 victory over Fisher in a Heart of Illinois Conference game Friday night at Tremont.
Tremont pushed its record to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the league. The Turks, along with Fisher (5-4, 4-4), will have to await today's announced playoff pairings to see if their playoff points were enough to qualify for a berth.
Tremont took control early with a 15-yard scoring pass from Szetela to Philip Schafer in the first quarter. The Turks boosted the advantage to 21-0 by halftime on a one-yard run by Szetela and a 4-yard plunge by VanRheeden.
Tremont blew the game open in the third quarter with a one-yard run by VanRheeden and a one-yard scoring scamper by Szetela for a 35-0 bulge.
"You have to tip your hat to Tremont,'' said Fisher coach Matt Leng. "They got off to a quick start and played really tough. Our kids didn't quit. We just got beat by a better team."
Szetela completed 6 of 10 passes for 136 yards, three of those to Ben Martin for 113 yards. Martin also led the Turks in rushing with 54 yards on nine carries.
Josh Ingold, who ran for a game-high 92 yards, scored the lone Fisher touchdown with a 14-yard run in the final quarter. The Bunnies gained only 18 yards through the air, threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.
Fieldcrest 31, Ridgeview 0
Quarterback Jordan Krone threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Fieldcrest's defense completely shut down Ridgeview as the Knights (7-2, 6-2) gained a share of second place with a league victory at Colfax.
Fieldcrest took command early, grabbing a 16-0 lead in the first quarter on a 7-yard run by Jake Martin and a 20-yard interception return for touchdown by Jake Bane.
The Knights boosted the advantage to 24-0 by halftime on a 1-yard TD run by Krone.
Krone gained 33 yards rushing and completed 6 of 10 passes for 66 yards, including a 4-yard scoring toss to Darin Meierhofer in the final period to complete the scoring. Josh North paced the Knights rushing attack with 41 yards on 11 carries.
Ridgeview (6-3, 5-3) was limited to 101 yards rushing and 15 yards passing.
"It was frustrating,'' said Ridgeview coach Mike Benton. "Give (Fieldcrest) credit - they did a nice job."
LeRoy 49, Oakland Tri-County 14
With a second-place finish in the tough Heart of Illinois Conference and a playoff berth already assured, the LeRoy Panthers went outside of the conference to finish the regular season with a home victory over Oakland Tri-County.
Senior quarterback Ryan Koerner finished with 80 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 10 carries while completing 4 of 6 passes for 74 yards and a score to lead LeRoy as the Panthers finished the regular season with a 7-2 mark.
"At the beginning of the season, our ultimate goal was to get better every week and I think we've done that," said LeRoy coach B.J. Zeleznik. "We had a very enjoyable regular season to get seven wins and finish second in the conference."
The Panthers led 7-6 after one period on a Dushon Morris 38 yard touchdown run before scoring 20 unanswered second quarter points to pull out to a 27-6 halftime advantage.
Kyle Samples scored from 10 yards out for LeRoy before Koerner added touchdown runs of 27 and 5 yards for the halftime lead.
Oakland pulled to within 27-14 early in the third period before the Panthers added three scores to seal the victory.
Rodney Henson had a 5-yard touchdown run with 9:17 to play in the third before Koerner found Brent Alexander on a 24 yard scoring pass four minutes later.
Corey Matlock completed the scoring with two minutes to play on a 62 yard touchdown run for the final. Cody Underwood added the two-point conversion run while T.J. Marcum had three extra-point kicks for the game.
LeRoy finished with 296 yards rushing and 74 passing for 370 total yards while holding Oakland to 164 yards on the ground and none passing. Jordan Stone was in on 15 tackles to lead the Panthers on defense.
Morris had two receptions for 47 yards to lead LeRoy receivers.
"The last three games, we've played well and I think we're peaking at the right time," Zeleznik added. "Oakland was a good team and a good nonconference foe to get us ready for the playoffs. I'm proud of my kids regardless of how we do in the playoffs."
Lexington 52, Dee-Mack 0
Senior quarterback Alex Tanney threw for 307 yards and six touchdowns as Lexington (6-3, 6-2) clinched a share of second place in the Heart of Illinois with a regular season-ending win at Mackinaw.
Tanney, who connected 17 of 20 passes, struck early with first-quarter touchdown throws of 16 yards to Bruce Freed and 9 yards to Eric Schuler for a 12-0 Minutemen lead.
Tanney continued the aerial assault in the second quarter. He connected with Schuler on scoring strikes of 26 and 42 yards, the second one coming with two seconds remaining before halftime for a 40-0 advantage. Tanney also hooked up with Freed from 4 yards out and Ben Winterland on a 32-yard scoring toss.
Schuler finished with nine receptions for 170 yards for the Minutemen, who had already secured a spot in the playoffs.
Deer Creek-Mackinaw (2-7, 2-6) received a game-high 65 yards on 19 carries from junior Matt Taylor. Quarterback Jeff Hendricks completed 6 of 13 passes for 83 yards with four interceptions. The Chiefs also lost a fumble.
Schuler had three of Lexington's four interceptions.
The Minutemen completed the scoring in the third quarter with a 13-yard run by T.J. Stinde and a one-yard plunge by Jesse Kemp.
Heyworth 40, EP-G 23
Jacob Underwood rushed for a game-high 152 yards and Nick Law scored three touchdowns as Heyworth (3-6, 3-5) ended its season with a victory over El Paso-Gridley in league action at Heyworth.
EPG (1-8, 1-7) grabbed a quick 15-0 lead in the first quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Adam Reel and a 5-yard run by Matt Schifferer.
Law pulled Heyworth to within 15-8 by returning the kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown after EPG's second score. The Hornets scored twice in the second period to take a 20-15 halftime advantage. Nick Kronmiller sped 43 yards for a touchdown and Nathan Spaulding bulled 4 yards for a score.
Heyworth blew the game open in the fourth quarter behind scoring runs of 5 and 6 yards by Law. Law finished with 83 yards rushing on a team-high 20 carries. Clayton Slayback helped seal the win for the Hornets with a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown in the final quarter.
Heyworth totaled 342 yards on offense with 327 coming on the ground. Kronmiller chipped in 68 yards rushing.
Reel paced EPG with 108 yards rushing on 21 carries. Quarterback Jordan McKinsey added 91 yards rushing, including a 67-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Blue Ridge 20, Tri-Valley 6
Blue Ridge running back Mahx Godin recorded two rushing touchdowns to lead the Knights past Tri-Valley in a conference game at Farmer City. Godin reached the end zone in both the first and fourth quarters.
The only score for the Vikings (1-8, 0-8) came on Seth Wagner's 11-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Junior defensive back Dylan Houser produced a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter for the Knights (1-8, 0-8) to put the game away.
