EUREKA - Dominic Kegel ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and Kyle Sanniec kicked a pair of field goals as Greenville College spoiled Eureka College's homecoming, 26-20, Saturday in an Illini-Badger Conference football game at McKinzie Field.

Eureka College (0-6, 0-4) led 14-13 with 13 minutes, 8 seconds left in the fourth quarter after Nick Lindsey scored on a quarterback keeper and Matt Knake booted the extra point.

However, a crowd of 1,342 watched Greenville (4-2, 3-1) take a 26-13 lead on Kegel's 2-yard touchdown run and a 46-yard pass from Kegel to Bryson Taylor.

Eureka College pulled within 26-20 with 2:12 left on a 67-yard pass from Lindsey to El Paso native Chris Carr.

"We're a young team and that was the best effort we have had here," said second-year Eureka College coach Dan Sullivan. "If you look at the stats and you look at the teams we've played and the teams (Greenville) has played, and you match them up, it was the best effort we've had. Even from the kids on the sidelines, there was an outstanding effort. We were 100 percent into it."

The Red Devils were led by senior running back Damon Mehlberg, a Bloomington High School graduate who ran for 99 yards on 17 carries, including a 43-yard TD run in the second quarter.

"Damon Mehlberg is just a gamer," Sullivan said. "There are times he and (junior running back) Justin Dempsey just create (yardage)."

Carr had three catches for 105 yards, while Lindsey finished 11 of 22 passing for 141 yards. Normal Community product Cody Troutman paced the Eureka College defense with 12 tackles.

"We're still making a few 'young kid' mistakes," Sullivan said of his defense.

Kegel, a sophomore, was 9 of 16 passing for 173 yards. Justin Tyler led the visitors in rushing with 69 yards on 16 carries.

Mehlberg's touchdown run pulled Eureka College within 10-7 at halftime. A 32-yard field goal by Sanniec late in the third quarter put Greenville up 13-7 before Lindsey's 1-yard run gave the Red Devils their short-lived lead. Lindsey's score capped Eureka College's longest drive of the day ? 81 yards on 13 plays.

Kegel scored with 11:46 left in the fourth quarter to put Greenville ahead to stay. He followed with his scoring pass to Taylor with 6:56 remaining.

The Eureka College football facility was named in honor of Pete FioRito at halftime. FioRito, a former Red Devils player, died of cancer in 2003 at age 45.
