Maybe, just maybe, we're all done watching Brett Favre throw passes to high school wide receivers.
But don't hold your breath.
The NFL Network and ESPN have bombarded football fans ad nauseam the last couple months with the possibility of Favre unretiring (again!) and playing for the Minnesota Vikings. We've seen him testing out his surgically repaired right arm with high schoolers in Mississippi (again!). We've heard former players turned talking heads say Favre still has game and desire and should be in uniform (again!).
What we don't hear is Favre himself. He usually lets pals such as Steve Mariucci blab on about Favre's greatness and glory days and how No. 4 deserves to take his time about whether or not to return. Never mind the Vikings let quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels feel like unwanted stepkids.
How did we ever survive offseasons without a possible Favre comeback dominating the news?
The madness seemed to end this week. Favre told Vikings coach Brad Childress he won't be coming out of retirement. On the eve of training camps opening, the NFL spotlight goes back to the Manning boys, Brady and Urlacher.
Unless, of course, Favre changes his mind (again!).
In two weeks, Favre could decide he misses the camaraderie, action and, most of all, adulation from his former cronies. Then he'll let everyone talk about him for a couple more days before jetting off to Minnesota, complete with cameras at the airport greeting him.
Don't think that will happen? Stay tuned. This story isn't done yet.
It's not a terribly exciting sports viewing weekend, but here are some of the better choices:
Golf: U.S. Senior Open (NBC, Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m.): The 50-plus set ventures to Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. That's where John Daly became famous by winning 1991 PGA. Golf hasn't been the same since.
MLB: Yankees at White Sox (Fox, Saturday 3 p.m.; WGN, Sunday 1 p.m.): Mark Buehrle, who will pitch Sunday, might have to be near perfect in every start rest of way for South Siders to make postseason.
IRL: Meijer Indy 300 (Versus, Saturday 7 p.m.): Tony Kanaan, who won this race in 2007, plans to compete despite being burned in the hands and face last week in scary pit row fire. Talk about tough guys.
