MONTICELLO - The ball shot out of a crowd in front of the goal and found the back of the net. That score off a corner kick, in the 33rd minute of the first half, was enough to send Warrensburg-Latham High School past Central Catholic, 1-0, in a Monticello Class A Sectional soccer game Friday.
No. 2 seed Warrensburg-Latham advances to Monday's championship game against No. 1 seed Urbana Uni-High. No. 6 seed Central Catholic ends its season with a 12-9-2 record.
"We played an amazing game," Saints coach Sebastian Heiduschke said. "Once again, we were equal to the other team. We actually dominated the first half with the exception of that one slip (the corner-kick goal)."
Central Catholic nearly tied the game later in the first half, but Warrensburg-Latham's goalie barely kept Patrick Kniery's shot out of the corner of the net.
The Cardinals outshot the Saints, 17-8. "They put a little more pressure on in the second half, but most of their shots weren't really convincing," Heiduschke said.
Central Catholic goaltender Ben Kelch made seven saves.
Despite the loss, Heiduschke said the Saints' season was successful.
"We got off to a sluggish start, but really pulled everything together," he said. "The last four or five games we've been really amazing. It's unfortunate the season is over."
