BLOOMINGTON - For the second time this season, the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team will have to adjust to the loss of a teammate.
Titan senior guard Amanda Glerum, who suffered a torn muscle in her right quadriceps during Saturday's win over North Park, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to relieve pressure from a compartment syndrome injury.
Titans' junior guard Crystal Dye went out for the year right before the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season started with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Glerum's prognosis is good but she is expected to spend 7 to 10 days in the hospital before she can begin her recovery.
"We feel bad for her because she's such a great person," said IWU coach Mia Smith. "It's tough on her teammates to see this happen to her.
"We just have to keep plugging away."
Glerum, a graduate of Champaign Centennial High School, had started all 17 game for the Titans, averaging 9.5 points per game while shooting .938 (45 of 48) from the free-throw line. She is 19th in all-time scoring at IWU with 827 points and is tied for second with 150 career 3-pointers.
Smith said Glerum's teammates will have to pick up the slack.
"I've known that we were deep in our bench - we go 9-10 deep," Smith said. "All of them will just have to step up. We want to thrive, not just survive.
"Dye was our best on-ball defender but we adjusted to her loss. Amanda, I think, was our second-best on-ball defender, but we'll just keep adjusting."
