5 years ago (2001): University High's dream of winning the Class A State Golf Tournament literally washed away at Prairie Vista Golf Course when the final round was canceled after about nine holes because of heavy rain. That meant the first-round scores stood, giving Effingham St. Anthony a one-shot victory over U High.

15 years ago (1991): Andrew Magee won the five-day Las Vegas Invitational with a par on the second playoff hole to beat Illinois State graduate D.A. Weibring. Both golfers shot 329 for 90 holes in what was almost certainly the lowest-scoring event in PGA Tour history.

25 years ago (1981): University High senior Steve Milligan tied for third place with a 74 in what is generally considered to be the toughest IHSA Class A golf sectional and advanced to the state tournament. Bloomington edged Streator and Moline by one shot for the third and last qualifying spot in the LaSalle-Peru Class AA sectional.

50 years ago (1956): Illinois State Normal punched a few holes in the cloak of invincibility surrounding Eastern Michigan and delighted a homecoming crowd of approximately 5,000 fans with a 22-7 upset. Eastern's ballyhooed halfback Kerry "The Cat" Keating was a subdued kitten after tangling with the Redbird forward wall.
