Chiddix defeats Homer for Class 8AA championship

The Chiddix Junior High School girls volleyball team won the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 8AA state tournament championship match with a 21-13, 21-10 decision over Homer Glen Homer Wednesday night at Decatur.

The state crown was the second for Chiddix, which also triumphed in 2002. The Chargers, who are coached by Rhonda Klockenga, finished the season 24-4.

Mary Trimpe provided nine service points and one ace for Chiddix, which also received eight service points from Lexi Cesssna, five from Lindsey Freed and three apiece from Carey Read and Ally Howell.

Homer Glen Homer (19-10) was led by the four service points of Allie Gritzman.

In the third place match, East St. Louis Clark (22-5) downed Herscher Limestone (24-5), 21-7, 21-12.

Mount Pulaski third in 8A

Brooke Merold had eight service points and two aces to spark Mount Pulaski (27-2) to a third-place match victory over Pawnee, 21-10, 21-17, in the Class 8A state tournament at Central Catholic High School.

Ashley Southerlan added five service points and one ace for Mount Pulaski while teammate Samantha Fanning chipped in four service points to go with one ace. Kyley Wyss added three service points and Meghan Stoll two.

Pawnee (20-6) was led by Mallory Crain and Payge Bowen, who had three service points apiece.

In the championship match, Peoria Limestone Walters topped Lewistown Central, 21-18, 21-6. Peoria Limestone Walters finished the season 27-1 while Lewistown Central closed at 19-8.
