U High 3, Sacred Heart-Griffin 0
Zach Wall had a goal and an assist while Joshua Rule had two assists to lead the University High School soccer team to a 3-0 win over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Thursday at Normal.
Phil Hamilton opened the scoring for the Pioneers (14-2-4) at the 16-minute mark of the first half off a Wall assist. E.J. Schiller put the Pioneers up 2-0 on what U High coach Bodo Fritzen called "the most beautiful goal I've seen in a long time."
The play began in the U High backfield and involved seven different players one-touch passing the ball up the field to Rule on the wing. Rule then hit a streaking Schiller who drilled the ball into the Sacred Heart-Griffin net at the 23rd-minute mark.
Wall closed out the scoring off Rule's second assist with 8 minutes remaining. The Pioneers had 12 shots on net while U High freshman goalkeeper Cole Wardlow turned away all seven Sacred Heart-Griffin attempts.
West 2, Mount Zion 1
T.J. Lemons' rebound goal midway through the second half proved to be the difference as visiting Normal West edged Mount Zion in the Wildcats' final regular-season match.
Mount Zion jumped out early, taking a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest. Normal West (12-7-1) countered in the 35th minute when Lucas Sylvester converted a pass from Nate Gottsacker to knot the game at 1-1 at the half.
The two teams battled back and forth through the first 25 minutes of the second half before Lemons, moving all the way up from his defender position, snagged a rebound off a Wildcat shot and put away the game-winner.
Normal West had 20 shots on goal for the match while the Wildcat goalkeeper duo of Amir Ghasemi and Rylan Miyat stopped all but one of Mount Zion's four scoring attempts.
West will host Bloomington at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Normal Community Class AA Sectional.
Central 2, Peoria Christian 2
Visiting Central Catholic tuned up for postseason play by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to earn the tie.
The Saints (9-8-2) cut the deficit to 2-1 just before halftime when Tony Beoletto scored off a Patrick Kniery assist. John Zappa connected for an unassisted goal in the 68th minute for the equalizer.
Peoria Christian (8-7-3) built a 13-7 edge in shots on goal over the Saints, who will face Blue Ridge at 4 p.m. today at White Oak Park in Bloomington in the first round of the Monticello Class A Sectional.
"It was a wonderful comeback," said Central Catholic coach Sebastian Heiduschke. "After it was 2-1 we dominated the game. It was the best game of our season. I'm really looking forward to the sectional."
Centennial 1, Bloomington 0
Kyle Bullock scored an unassisted goal in the 19th minute to send Champaign Centennial to the Big 12 Conference win at Bloomington.
The injury-depleted Purple Raiders (8-10-1, 2-5-2) were outshot 12-3. BHS sophomore goalie Shailer Thomas had nine saves.
"We have a couple of guys injured so we knew scoring was going to be an issue today," said BHS coach Tony Bauman. "With the adjustments we had to make, I thought we defended fairly well. We made the one mistake, but otherwise we were pretty solid in the back. We just couldn't create many chances up front."
Calvary 3, Decatur Christian 2
Grant Touma scored all three goals for the Crusaders, including the game-winner with six minutes to play, as Calvary Baptist rallied to defeat Decatur Christian at Decatur.
Touma scored on an assist from Tommy Horine to pull the Crusaders even at the intermission before Decatur Christian took a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
Seth Howerton fed Touma to tie the score 2-2 12 minutes into the second half before Touma added the game winner at the 74-minute mark on an assist from Tyler Collins.
Jack Campbell had three saves in the net for Calvary Baptist as the Crusaders outshot Decatur Christian 15-5.
