5 years ago (2001): The Illinois State women's soccer team used a deflected goal in the second overtime to edge Evansville 2-1 to secure the Missouri Valley Conference title. A cross pass from Diana Puckett was deflected off an Evansville defender's head and into the goal for the game-winner.

15 years ago (1991): The University High soccer team, receiving two goals from Tom Maack, ended its regular season with a 6-0 victory over Washington. Normal Community and Morton played to a 0-0 tie in a game featuring the play of goalies Matt Brandenburg of NCHS and Jeremy Shaw of Morton.

25 years ago (1981): Six Centralia natives, including Dwight Eddleman, now of Gibson City, are the first inductees into the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame. Eddleman is grants-in-aid administrator at the University of Illinois and enjoyed an illustrious playing career in football, basketball and track for the Illini.

50 years ago (1956): University High football coach Burton O'Connor praised Pontiac as being the best team the Pioneers have faced all year after Pontiac ground out a 14-0 Corn Belt Conference victory. He was impressed with Pontiac's line, saying ends Byron Coit and Ken McCoy are "the best we've seen this season."
