DANVILLE - Undefeated regular season. Check! Undisputed Big 12 Conference championship. Check!
The Normal Community High School football team completed a 9-0 conference season and regular season with an impressive 35-12 Big 12 Conference victory over a very fast and talented Danville team Friday night to accomplish two of the goals the team set at the beginning of the season.
Now the Ironmen, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, set their sights on the ultimate goal - making a return trip to Champaign and a state championship.
Normal Community finished with three runners with at least 76 yards rushing and had 338 yards on the ground for the game to just 60 yards rushing for Danville.
Dan Moore led the way for the Ironmen with 90 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns while Joey Anderson had 89 yards on 10 carries.
Senior running back Austin Davis finished with 76 yards on eight carries while finding the end zone three times.
"You try to stay with what you do best and that's what we do best, we run the ball," said Normal Community coach Hud Venerable. "We have a good running quarterback, and our line is getting better and we have a lot of good backs.
"When you're playing Danville, you don't want that clock to stop. You want to keep their offense off the field. I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight."
"Last year, we didn't have that much diversity," said Davis. "This year, when we take someone out, we have a back just as good as the person who came out. We all run with the same power and we usually run right at you. We just pride ourselves on power running."
After a scoreless first quarter, NCHS scored on three consecutive possessions to jump out to a 21-0 advantage.
Moore capped an eight play, 69-yard drive with a 7-yard scoring run for a 7-0 advantage with 8:02 to play in the second period.
Davis scored the first of his three touchdowns two minutes later on a 16-yard run before Moore ran 11 yards for a touchdown with three minutes to play in the half.
Danville (5-4, 5-4) scored right before the half and added the only touchdown of the third quarter to pull within 21-12 with one period to play.
The Ironmen, behind the running of Davis, put the game away with two fourth-quarter scores.
Davis broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and raced 33 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with 8:10 to play before a Jake Detmers interception and 52-yard return to the 9-yard line set up the final score.
Davis ran 3 yards for the final NCHS touchdown.
"It was a tough night, but we didn't expect anything different," Venerable added. "Danville is extremely well coached, they are a playoff team and they have had a really good year. They played us very tough tonight."
Omar Clayton finished with 50 yards passing on four completions while rushing for 31 yards. Kennedy Freeman added 35 yards rushing while Marcus King caught two passes for 41 yards to lead the Ironmen receivers.
"You have to admire how mistake-free they play," said Danville coach B.J. Luke. "They're not a team that turns the ball over and makes mistakes penalty-wise. Our kids felt like tonight, they stood toe-to-toe with them and didn't get a decision."
"It's been a great run," Venerable added. "That was one of our goals to win the Big 12, and now we've done that outright. Now, we can enjoy the bus ride home and go to work on the second season."
