NORMAL — The Normal CornBelters have released two everyday players from the 2017 season in outfielder Diego Cedeno and infielder Yeixon Ruiz.

Cedeno batted .263 with no home runs and 33 RBIs last season while serving as Normal's center fielder.

Playing mostly third base, Ruiz was among the Frontier League leaders in stolen bases with 34 while hitting .268 with six home runs and 32 RBIs.

"Each year we have to let go of guys we prefer not to due to league classifications and salary cap," team president Steve Malliet said. "We needed to make sure we could pay our other cornerstone guys that we have and still be in our cap range."

Managerial search: Malliet expects Normal's search for a new field manager to stretch into late January or early February. Former manager Brooks Carey resigned to take a similar position in another independent league in December.

"We had so many more candidates than I ever dreamed we would, so we are still going through the process of interviews right now," said Malliet. "Thankfully, we have a good start on our roster for this season already."

Normal's season opens on May 11.
