NORMAL - For the first time in four years, there doesn't appear to be any coaching changes looming among Missouri Valley Conference basketball schools. Of course, things change in a hurry. | NCAA men's basketball page
Yet there has been plenty of shakeup since the Valley Tournament ended in early March.
Here are some of the developments at the other league schools besides Illinois State, where reserve guard Sead Odzic announced he will graduate and not return. The Redbirds also got commitments from 6-foot-9 power forward Jackie Carmichael from South Kent (Conn.) Prep and 6-1 juco guard Austin Hill of Southeastern Illinois:
- Indiana State might get better in a hurry with the addition of Jake Kelly, a 6-6 sophomore guard from Iowa. Kelly averaged 11.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while starting 24 games for the Hawkeyes and twice earning Big Ten Conference Player of the Week honors.
Kelly could play for the Sycamores next season. He will apply to the NCAA for a hardship exemption to the transfer rule where players have to sit out a season. His mother, Julia, died in an airplane crash last June, and Kelly is transferring to be closer to his family. His father, Bob, lives in Terre Haute, Ind.
- Another ex-Iowa player, point guard Jeff Peterson, also could be headed to the Valley. Peterson (10.6 ppg, 4.1 apg) is originally from Springfield, Mo., and reports are he's looking at Missouri State.
- A couple key players have left their programs at Drake and Evansville, respectively.
Drake sophomore guard Josh Parker, the team's third-leading scorer with a 10.7 average, got his release to seek a faster style of play. Mark Phelps just completed his first year as Drake coach.
At Evansville, freshman guard Kaylon Williams is hoping to transfer to a school closer to his home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Williams was on the Valley All-Freshman Team after leading the league with 4.9 assists to go with 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Evansville also lost two seldom-used players - junior guard Darin Granger and 7-foot freshman center Zach House.
- Creighton could be losing two key players.
Junior point guard Cavel Witter (7.7 ppg, 2.2 apg) has asked for a release after not receiving assurances from Coach Dana Altman of more playing time. The Omaha World-Herald also reports 6-9 freshman Kenton Walker (5.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.2 blocks per game) is contemplating a transfer.
The Bluejays have gotten a commitment from 6-6 power forward Wayne Runnels of Northern Oklahoma College. Runnels averaged 11 rebounds per game.
- A day after losing the CollegeInsider.com Tournament final, Bradley granted freshman guard Darian Norris his release. The 5-11 Norris wants a school where he can play more point guard. Norris started five games for the Braves, averaging 3.5 points in 12.2 minutes.
Bradley received a commitment the next day from 6-4 shooting guard Jake Eastman from Richmond, Va. Eastman's father, Kevin, is a Boston Celtics assistant coach and a former college head coach at Washington State and North Carolina-Wilmington.
- Wichita State reserve point guard Reggie Chamberlain has decided to leave the program. Chamberlain, a sophomore, averaged 3.4 points in 11.8 minutes.
