CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- After Illinois State jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the University of Miami, the Hurricanes rallied for five unanswered runs to beat the Redbirds, 5-4, in 11 innings Tuesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla.
Ronny Rodriguez, who was 4-for-6, delivered a walk-off home run with two outs in the 11th to finish off ISU.
Mike Hollenbeck was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Matt Mirabal drove in a pair of runs to lead the Redbirds (7-4).
Illinois State committed five errors while striking out 14 times and stranding nine baserunners to let the Hurricanes (5-7) back into the contest.
“I love the fact that we battled hard and took Miami to extra innings,” ISU coach Mark Kingston said. “It’s just disappointing that we didn’t execute a little better, because that’s a game that we really could have won.”
Mirabal scored on a wild pitch to give the Redbirds a 1-0 first-inning lead before singling home Josh Colon and Hollenbeck in the fourth to up the margin to 3-0. ISU added its fourth run in the fifth after Ty Wiesemeyer hit a two-out double and later scored on a wild pitch.
Redbird starter JD Leanard survived 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs, just one of which was earned.
After a one-inning appearance by Jacob Wielebnicki, Kenny Long (2-1) took the ball for the final 4 1/3 innings. Long struck out six while scattering three hits, the big blow being Rodriguez’s game-winning blast.
The Redbirds finish their two-game series against the Hurricanes today with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
