Tyson Hays' three-run home run led the Illinois State baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Indiana State on Sunday at Terre Haute, Ind.
The result earned the Redbirds their first series triumph at Indiana State since 2014 and lifted their record to 14-17 overall and 4-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Owen Miller, Collin Braithwaite, Nick Zouras and Joe Aeilts had two hits apiece for Illinois State, which outhit its host, 11-7.
ISU got its offense in gear in the second inning when Zouras and Aeilts hit back-to-back one-out singles before Hays notched his first collegiate hit, a three-run homer to left field.
Matt Walker (4-0), the first of four Redbird pitchers, fanned five and walked two in six innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run.
Indiana State fell to 17-13 overall and 3-6 in the MVC.
Women's golf in 6th: After the opening day of the MVC Championships at Newton, Kansas, the ISU women's golf team is in sixth with a score of 319, 14 strokes behind leader Missouri State.
The Redbirds were led by Cailtin Sims, who is tied for 13th with a 6-over-par 78, three strokes out of the lead at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Teammate Paige Seiser is tied for 20th (79) while Kiley Walsh is tied for 27th (80).
The three-day tournament continues Monday.
Women's golf team win: The IWU women's golf team hung on to its first-day lead to win the 18-team Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling at Normal's Ironwood Golf Course.
The Titans, led by medalist Rylie Loux, shot 320 to finish with a 629 total, 10 shots ahead of runners-up DePauw and Huntingdon. IWU's B team was ninth (666).
Loux shot 79-152 to win by a stroke over McKenzie Swenson of Gustavus Adolphus. IWU's Jordan Koehler tied for third at 78-55 while Olivia Ruff tied for 12th at 82-160.
Softball team sweeps: The IWU softball team (18-7, 8-0) swept a home doubleheader against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe North Park (11-20, 3-6) by scores of 9-0 and 15-4.
In the five-inning opener, Maggie Graham stroked a first-inning grand slam and went on to finish with two hits. Teammate Brittany Murphy had three of the Titans' eight hits to drive in two runs. Amanda Lack also had two RBIs.
Winning pitcher Brea Walker (5-3) fanned seven and walked one in five innings of two-hit pitching.
In the five-inning nightcap, the Titans' 10-run third inning featured a three-run homer by Sydney Alery, who finished with two hits. Earlier, Jillian Runyon stroked a two-run homer in the second inning as part of a three-hit, three-RBI outing. In the first inning, Sam Berghoff hit a solo home run.
Winner Morgan Bowler (1-0) fanned seven and walked two in five innings. Murphy chipped in three RBIs.
Women's lacrosse romps: Dani Engelbreit and Claudia Richman had five goals apiece to lead the IWU women's lacrosse team (9-4, 3-0) to a 17-2 CCIW victory over visiting Carthage (8-5, 1-2).
Grainne Kelly added three goals and six assists for the Titans, who outshot their guest, 31-9. Also scoring for IWU were Riley Rooney, Amanda Best, Mariah Smith and Heather Grimmer. Splitting time in goal were Claire Quist (four saves) and Janaye Godfrey (three saves).
Men's lacrosse wins: The IWU men's lacrosse team defeated host Elmhurst College, 17-10, to improve to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the CCIW. The Bluejays fell to 10-2 and 2-1.
Peter Trunk paced the Titans with seven goals while Alex Doorenbos and Will Rossi chipped in three apiece. Also scoring were J.C. Grabarek, Nick Winter, Bailey Marth and Joe Hynes. Rossi had two of Wesleyan's seven assists.
IWU goalie McGuire Mynatt made 10 saves in 58:20 of playing time. The Titans outshot their host, 38-20.
