The Illinois State softball team closed out a winning weekend at the LSU Tiger Classic on Sunday with a 2-0 blanking of Purdue at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, La.
The win, the second of the tournament over the Boilermakers, ups the Redbirds' record to 8-12 after a 3-2 weekend showing.
Riley Hale hit a leadoff single to start the top of the second inning and later scored to give ISU a 1-0 lead. The Redbirds would add an insurance run in the seventh when Alex Caliva singled home pinch-runner Stephanie Tulen.
Freshman Morgan Day (2-5) went the distance for the win, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out one.
Illinois State travels to Norman, Okla. next weekend to close the preseason at the Oklahoma Tournament.
Baseball drops series finale: The ISU baseball team couldn't protect an early lead in a 6-5 loss to Morehead State at Allen Field in Morehead, Ky. The Redbirds, who took two of three from the Eagles in the eekend set, fell to 5-4.
ISU broke out for four runs in top of the second highlighted by catcher Collin Braithwaite's two-run run single to take a 4-0 lead.
Morehead State battled back with a single run in the bottom of the third before putting up three more in the bottom of the sixth off reliever Jeff Lindren to it at 4-all. The Eagles scored two more in the bottom of the eighth to take their first lead at 6-4.
Owen Miller's RBI single in the top of the ninth cut the deficit to 6-5 but the Redbirds couldn't complete the comeback. Miller finished with a pair of hits as did Jordan Libman, Ryan Hutchinson and Braitwaite.
Michael Sebby (0-1) took the loss.
Illinois State travels to Seattle for a four-game set against the University of Washington beginning Friday.
Gymnasts victorious: The Redbird gymnastics team posted its best score of the season in Sunday's 193.600-191.075 win over Midwest Independent Conference foe Centenary on Senior Day at Horton Field House in Normal.
Gabrielle Cooke won in the vault (9.825), balance beam (9.775) and floor exercise (9.900) while claiming the all-around title with a career-best score of 39.250.
Anna Marema added a win in uneven bars (9.825) for the Redbirds. who will complete in the Illinois Classic against UIC, Illinois and Northern Illinois on March 11.
Softball splits: The IWU softball team ended its season-opening weekend with a 3-3 record after a doubleheader split on Sunday at the NFCA D-III Leadoff Classic at Tucson, Ariz. The Titans fell to George Fox in the opener, 4-3, before bouncing back with a 12-3 win over Thomas More in the nightcap.
IWU fought back from a 4-0 deficit against George Fox, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh before stranding the tying run at second as the game ended. Mackenzie Marquis (0-1) went the distance in the loss. Kara Bischoff led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.
The Titans used an eight-run second inning in the five-inning win over Thomas More. Sam Berghoff had two hits and four RBIs and Jillian Runyon chipped in three hits while driving in two to power the 14-hit attack. Ally Wiegand (2-1) gave up three hits and struck out three for the victory.
Women's lacrosse falls: Dani Englebreit had four goals and two assists as the Titan women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-9 decision to Rhodes College at Tucci Field in Bloomington.
Kelly Graine chipped in two goals and an assist for the Titans (2-2) while Ashely Doyle had seven goals and an assist to pace Rhodes (4-1).
Baseball wins: Charlie Harrigan went 4-for-4 with seven RBIs as the Hawks moved to 5-0 with a 15-5 win nnings over Ellsworth on Sunday at The Corn Crib in Normal.
Arthur Sells drove in four runs and scored three times as Brett Wicklund picked up the win, striking out four in the five-inning win.
