Illinois Wesleyan's softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to upset No. 15-ranked Otterbein, 3-2, in an NCAA Division III Alma Regional first-round game Friday at Alma, Mich.
IWU improved to 32-12 and faces Alma (28-8) at 10 a.m. (CST) Saturday. Otterbein (34-7) meets DePauw (23-20) in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m.
The Titans trailed 2-0 until the sixth. Freshman Shelby Funk's single off Gabby Johnson (16-1) scored pinch-runner Miam Massarro. Johnson's two-out wild pitch in the seventh scored Brittany Murphy to tie the game before Fulk's fielder's choice grounder scored Jillian Runyon with the winning run.
Marquis Mackenzie (12-6) allowed eight hits, including a solo home run to Tory Speakman in the fourth to give Otterbein a 2-0 lead, to pick up the win. She walked three and struck out four. Johnson gave up just four hits.
Titans out in CCIW baseball: IWU got runners at second and third with no outs in the ninth inning before North Central reliever Nick Rogalski got the final three outs as the Cardinals won, 2-0, to end the Titans' season in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament at Naperville.
IWU (21-20) stayed alive earlier in the day with an 11-0 victory over Wheaton.
Braden Miller (2-1) allowed one run in seven innings against North Central (23-16). But the Titans managed only six hits, including two by Jonathan Broadbear. Evan Blunk pitched eight shutout innings for North Central, which meets Augustana for the title Saturday.
IWU's Jim O'Brien (3-1) hurled a four-hit shutout against Wheaton, walking two and striking out eight. Gino Cavalieri had four of IWU's 14 hits, while Jarrod Juskiewicz and Stephen Billington each drove in three runs.
Women finish 15th in golf: Sophomore Jordan Koehler fired a final-round 82 for a 322 total and finished in 40th place to lead Illinois Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston.
IWU shot 336 to finish with a 1,329 total and take 15th. Rhodes overcame a one-shot deficit entering the day to edge George Fox by two strokes for the title at 1,217. Medalist honors went to Christina Herbert of Bridgewater after a 74-293.
Baseball falls to SIU: Greg Lambert's run-scoring double in the eighth inning lifted Southern Illinois to a 3-2 victory over Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference baseball game at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale.
ISU (12-35, 1-15) battled back from a 2-0 deficit. Collin Braithwaite's single scored Owen Miller in the sixth before Joe Butler's double brought across Derek Parola to tie the game in the seventh.
Butler had two of ISU's seven hits. Brady Huffman allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in five innings while striking out four. Jack Landwehr (1-5), the fourth Redbird pitcher, took the loss. SIU (24-26, 7-9) had six hits.
