Matt Lambert pitched six strong innings and the top four hitters in the Illinois State lineup combined for 10 hits Wednesday as the Redbirds shut out MacMurray, 8-0, at Duffy Bass Field.
Lambert (2-0) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven to help ISU improve to 26-12.
The game was scoreless until the fifth when the Redbirds struck for three runs. ISU added three in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Paul DeJong continued his hot hitting with three hits and four RBIs. Daniel Dwyer also had three of ISU's 12 hits.
Jack Czeszewski had two hits, drove in two and scored three times. Sean Beesley chipped in two hits and scored twice.
Steve Heilenbach, Cam Verbeke and JD Learnard followed Lambert with one scoreless inning each.
Clayton Ruckman, the second of five MacMurray pitchers, took the loss as the Highlanders fell to 11-24.
Valley honors Rutherford, Jensen: Illinois State's Ryan Rutherford and Curt Jensen were named the Missouri Valley Conference's Athletes of the Week on Wednesday for their performances in the Jesse Owens Classic at Columbus, Ohio.
Rutherford posted a school-record time of 13:49.99 in the 5,000-meter showcase, placing to ISU graduate assistant and unattached competitor Lex Williams. Jensen broke the Valley record and his own school mark in the shot put with a toss of 66-3 3/4.
