Jake Stewart had three of Illinois Wesleyan's 16 hits Tuesday as the Titans downed North Central, 16-9, in game one of a scheduled baseball doubleheader at Naperville.

Game two of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin twin bill was suspended by darkness after six innings and will be finished May 1 at IWU prior to the series finale.

IWU (13-10, 4-6) also received two hits each from Nick Figus, John Bosco, Jacob Houghton, Mike Plecki and Eric Kozlowski. Figus and Gino Cavalieri hit home runs.

Joe Prestamer, the last of IWU's three pitchers, got the win after allowing one run on four hits over the final 5⅓ innings. The win moved IWU coach Dennis Martel to within four victories of 800 (796-502-3).

Goodman nets CCIW honor: IWU's Karly Goodman and Wheaton’s Marissa Heath have been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Track Athletes of the Week. 

A senior from Arthur, Goodman won three events at the DePauw Invitational, taking the shot put (44-1¼), javelin (133-11) and hammer throw (153-6) as the Titans topped a six-team field. Her marks in the javelin and shot put are both ranked first in the CCIW and fourth and fifth, respectively, in Division III.


Burry ties for second: Illinois State's Zach Burry tied for second in the 19-team Missouri Tiger Invitational at Columbia, Mo., shooting two rounds of 70 Tuesday to finish with a 209 total. The winner was Missouri's Hayden Buckley at 204.

Burry led ISU to an 878 total, good for sixth place. Missouri won with an 839. ISU's next highest finisher was David Perkins in a tie for 21st (74-74-218).

MVC honors McConico: After a school record-breaking performance in the 110-meter high hurdles at the Arizona State Sun Angel Classic, ISU sophomore Jaylan McConico has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week.

McConico broke ISU’s 33-year-old record with a time of 13.81 seconds. Competing against world record-holder, Aries Merritt, McConico finished third. His mark ranks 14th in the nation, sixth in the NCAA West region, and first in the Valley. Don Burrell’s previous school record of 13.85 was set in 1985.

ISU hosts its lone home meet, the Redbird Invitational, on Saturday. Spectator admission is free.

Women's golf places fifth: Paige Seiser tied for 10th to lead Illinois State's women's golf team to fifth place in the 10-team Kansas City Intercollegiate at Creekmoor Golf Club. Seiser had a final-round 76 to end at 153. ISU's Caitlin Sims and Morgan Savage tied for 14th at 155.

ISU had a 307 Tuesday for a 621 total. North Dakota State won with a 596.

Finck hurls gem: Sarah Finck pitched a two-hitter Sunday as Illinois State's softball team posted an 8-0, five-inning victory over Loyola at Chicago. Finck (7-12) struck out five and walked none.

Alex Caliva had three hits and an RBI for the Redbirds (14-23, 5-5), while Caitlin Daly added two hits and three RBIs.
