ELMHURST — Illinois Wesleyan and University High School graduate John Baines has reached a verbal agreement to become the head basketball coach at Elmhurst College.

Baines has been head coach at St. Francis the past three years, compiling a 57-38 record. Prior to that, he was an assistant for 10 years at Elmhurst under Mark Scherer, who announced his retirement from coaching after 17 seasons.

“I enjoyed my three years at St. Francis and am grateful that they gave me an opportunity to become a head coach. Having said that, I’m very much looking forward to returning to Elmhurst,” Baines said.

“Elmhurst is a great school with great leadership and plays in one of the marquee conferences in all of Division III. I was a part of some of the best years in men’s basketball history and I feel that we can get the program back to the top again.”

Baines played at IWU on teams that had a 103-14 record, reaching the Division III Final Four twice and winning the 1997 national title.
