WAUKESHA, Wis. — Winning every quarter by at least seven points and having nine players finish with at least seven points added up to a blowout victory Saturday for the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team.
"I was really pleased with our halfcourt defense," said IWU coach Mia Smith after her No. 18-ranked Titans surged to an 89-46 blowout of Carroll in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action at Van Male Fieldhouse.
"We really focused on overplaying in the half court and not having to use our run-and-jump press. I was really proud we were able to hold them down and keep the temp at a good pace."
Freshman forward Raven Hughes, a University High School graduate, and junior guard Nina Anderson led the way with 12 points apiece while junior Ashley Schneider added 10 as the Titans improved to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in CCIW games.
Brittany Wald had 15 points as the only player in double figures for the Pioneers (5-12, 2-6). Katie Rossetti had 10 rebounds.
The Titans bolted to a 20-12 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 45-26 by halftime. IWU then finished with a 22-5 burst in the fourth.
"I think what made us click is we ended the game with 25 assists," said Smith. "We were patient enough and got really good looks and got very balanced scoring."
