NORMAL — Stephanie Glance won’t lose any sleep over the Illinois State basketball team’s less than stellar shooting percentage in her first game as a head basketball coach.

Glance instead delighted in the fact the Redbirds never let Illinois-Springfield rest in the team’s first and only exhibition game Tuesday at Redbird Arena.

“We saw a great effort from the entire team,” Glance said after a convincing 78-28 victory over the Division II foe. “Every person who went in played hard. This was a good night for a lot of reasons.”

ISU forced 23 turnovers and limited the Prairie Stars to 21.6 percent shooting.

“She (Glance) has talked about that’s how we’re going to win our games,” said point guard Amanda Clifton. “That’s how we should win games, getting steals, getting in (passing) lanes and going from there and executing on offense.”

Illinois-Springfield grabbed a 7-2 lead at the 17:13 mark but scored just four points the rest of the half.

ISU, which opens its regular season Nov. 12 at Illinois, scored 11 straight points while closing the half on a 34-4 streak.

“I thought we got smarter and sharper as the game went on,” Glance said. “You play these games to get the cobwebs out and the butterflies to fly in formation. I felt like we turned it around the first half with our defense.”

Senior Kenyatta Shelton, who sat out last season while rehabilitating from knee surgery, grabbed more offensive rebounds than the entire Prairie Stars’ team (11-10) and finished with 16 rebounds and nine points.

“When I walked into the locker room and got a chance to put on my jersey, I almost cried. I had to take a moment,” said Shelton. “It felt great to put my jersey back on. To get back on the court felt beyond great.”

Glance was concerned with neither Shelton’s 3 of 14 shooting nor her team’s 35.9 percent (28 of 78) mark.

“Yatti was unbelievable on the boards,” Glance said. “She’s coming back from ACL (surgery). Offense is rhythm and timing. She will get that back.”

Katie Broadway and Emily Hanley led ISU with 11 points each. Broadway and Shala Jackson grabbed nine rebounds each as the Redbirds dominated the boards, 69-36. Clifton topped ISU with six assists and four steals.

Paulina Pogorzelski and Bailey Beale led the Prairie Stars with eight points each. University High product Alyssa Palmer chipped in five, while Bloomington’s Amanda Hainlen scored three and led her team with eight rebounds.
