Former Illinois State women’s basketball standout Jamie Russell has signed to play professionally with Kara Trutnov of the ZBL Basketball Club in the Czech Republic.
Russell is the first Redbird women’s player to play professionally since 2009, when Kristi Cirone played for the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA and in Greece.
“Growing up, I always told myself I’d never play basketball for money because I never wanted it to be a job to me,” Russell said. “However, this opportunity is an experience of a lifetime and something I could never pass up.”
The ZBL season lasts eight months, not including playoffs. Play begins Sept. 20 and runs through April 20. Kara Trutnov had a 15-13 record and placed fourth in the A1 standings this past season.
Russell led the Redbirds in scoring (14.1 points per game), steals (92) and free throw percentage (.837) as a senior.
