NORMAL — Saint Louis University associate head coach Barb Smith will be introduced as the new head women’s basketball coach at Illinois State Monday in an afternoon news conference.
A former head coach at San Diego State, Smith takes over for Stephanie Glance, who left the Redbirds for a similar position at Columbia University on April 1.
Smith is a 25-year veteran of Division I coaching. She served as associate head coach at Minnesota from 2004-10, helping the Golden Gophers to a 115-75 record. Smith spent the 2010-11 season working on a book on leadership and mentorship before one season at Saint Louis.
“Barb is a proven winner and an experienced coach,” Saint Louis coach Lisa Stone said in a university press release at the time of Smith’s hiring. “Barb is one of the most highly regarded recruiters in the Midwest.”
A former player at Ohio State, Smith spent two seasons at California as the Golden Bears’ lead assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2002-04. Smith was the head coach at San Diego State from 1997-2002.
Smith also was lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at Colorado from 1988-97. The Buffaloes were 217-65 and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances over those nine seasons.
ISU director of athletics Gary Friedman will formally introduce Smith in a 1 p.m. news conference at the Kaufman Football Building. The public is invited to attend.
