NORMAL — Nearly doubling her scoring average, Illinois State senior forward Hannah Green has been selected to the first unit of the Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball all-star team.
Green averaged 6.6 points last season as a junior college transfer and is currently scoring 12.8 points as the Redbirds prepare to open MVC Tournament play Friday in Moline.
The 6-foot Green, the first Redbird to earn first team status since Chloe Nelson in 2014, also contributes 6.0 rebounds per game and leads the Valley at 2.0 blocks. Her 130 career blocks rank third in school history.
“I have been so impressed with Hannah’s drive and desire to become an MVC all-conference caliber player,” ISU coach Kristen Gillespie said. “This award is a testament to long hours she put into her game during the offseason.”
The Redbirds also placed junior Simone Goods on the MVC’s honorable mention list, while Paige Saylor was voted to both the Valley’s all-defensive team and all-freshman team.
Goods is ISU’s top scorer at 13.7 points and grabs 6.0 rebounds. She has been named MVC Newcomer of the Week three times and Player of the Week once.
“Simone has done a great job overcoming a few injuries to emerge as a force in the paint in the MVC,” said Gillespie. “Her play down the stretch definitely earned her this award.”
Saylor tops the MVC in minutes played (37.9) and steals (2.5). She is ISU's first all-defensive team pick since Jamie Russell in 2013.
“Paige continues to exceed every expectation our staff has set for her,” Gillespie said. “There was not a more valuable freshman in the conference. The best part of Paige’s game is she gets it done at both ends of the court.”
Joining Green on the first team were Drake's Sammie Bachrodt, Becca Hittner and Sara Rhine, Missouri State's Liza Fruendt and Alexa Willard, Southern Illinois' Kylie Giebelhausen and Nicole Martin, Wendi Bibbins of Indiana State, Valparaiso's Dani Franklin and Megan Maahs of Northern Iowa.
The Valley’s specialty awards will be announced Thursday between the tournament’s two play-in games.
