DECATUR — Molly McGraw's 21 points and four assists helped the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team down Millikin, 79-62, on Wednesday.
Winners of 12 straight, the No. 18 nationally ranked Titans improved to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Millikin fell to 5-11 and 0-7.
Raven Hughes and Nina Anderson added 13 points apiece for IWU while Maddie Merritt chipped in 11. Rebekah Ehresman had seven points and seven rebounds.
Millikin played IWU to a 14-14 draw when the Titans took off on a 17-1 run. Wesleyan pushed the gap to as many as 19 points in the third quarter only to have the Big Blue pull within 61-50 with 7:57 left.
Millikin impressed IWU coach Mia Smith with their ability to stay in the game.
"They are scrappy," she said. "They don't know how to quit.
"I thought we had some really good moments. I thought Molly (McGraw) looked back to form offensively. I thought Nina Anderson was really good in the first half."
IWU ended the game on an 18-12 run. The Titans got the best of a 29-12 difference in turnovers while outscoring their host on points off turnovers, 29-14. Wesleyan's bench outscored its counterpart, 29-16.
The contributions of Hughes didn't go unnoticed.
"Raven is just solid," Smith said. "She goes out and does exactly what you ask her to do."
Merritt injured an ankle late in the third quarter, but returned action later.
"Maddie tweeked her ankle," Smith said. "I hope she is going to be okay. We might sit her out of practice (on Thursday)."
Devin Curry led Millikin with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Jordan Hildebrand added 16 points.
"Curry has got a nice little shot," Smith said. "She lives at the free throw line. I think all of Millikin's playes know their roles well. They are going to win games in the conference, that's for sure."
The Titans return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carroll (5-11, 2-5).
