The Illinois State soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake on Sunday at Adelaide Street Field in Normal. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 12-3-2 overall and clinched the MVC regular season with a mark of 5-0-1 while the Redbirds fell to 9-7-2 and 3-3 in conference.
"This was a tough one," said head coach Brad Silvey. "I think our teams matched up really well against each other. Unfortunately, we were on the losing side of it today, but incredibly proud of our team's effort."
The match started slow for both teams with Drake finally breaking through in the 25th minute on a diving header goal by Alyssa Brand for a 1-0 lead that the Bulldogs carried into halftime.
Senior Kelli Zickert pulled ISU even at 1-all in the 68th minute, launching a rocket from 30 yards past Drake goalkeeper Haley Morris. Sophomore Kate Del Fava quickly followed suit with a header goal off an Emily Dickman free kick in the 71st minute for a 2-1 Redbird lead.
Drake bounced right back, getting the equalizer in the 73rd minute on Brand's second header goal of the match to force overtime. Aly Smith got the game-winner just three minutes into overtime, heading in a corner kick by Kasey Hurt to cap the Bulldogs comeback.
