The Illinois State volleyball team lost twice in the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic at St. Louis on Saturday.

The Redbirds (2-4) fell, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, to Kennesaw State before bowing to UC Irvine, 17-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20.

ISU's Lexi Wallen had career highs of 15 kills and 16 digs against Kennesaw State (3-1) while all-tournament selection Courtney Pence collected a match-high 36 digs, tying the seventh most in school history.

Jaelyn Keene added 14 kills and four blocks for ISU while Machayla Leonard contributed 10 kills and Sydney Holt eight. Stef Jankiewicz registered 42 assists and 14 digs.

“Kennesaw played well. They passed the ball well and dug everything,” said ISU coach Leah Johnson. “We got away from our process but we’ll regroup. We are a great squad and will refocus on our process. We will grow from this.”

Against UC Irvine, Keene notched 16 kills on .412 hitting while Lexi Varga had eight kills. Jankiewicz had 35 assists and Pence checked in with 28 digs.

The Anteaters (6-0) outhit the Redbirds, .203 to .175.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

Men's soccer ties: A goal by Keagan James and an own goal helped the Titan men's soccer team tie St. John Fisher, 2-2, in the Flower City Tournament at Rochester, N.Y.

IWU, which led 1-0 at halftime, moved to 0-1-1. St. John Fisher (1-0-1) received goals from Justin Ferron and Amar Mann. Titan goalie Alex Ruckstaetter made two saves.

Volleyball team falls twice: The IWU volleyball team lost to John Hopkins, 31-29, 17-25, 25-18, 25-17, and No. 2-ranked Emory, 25-27, 26-28, 25-19, 25-18, 15-9, in the Wittenberg Fall Classic at Springfield, Ohio.

Against John Hopkins, the Titans (0-3) received 14 kills from Rachel Burkman and 11 from all-tournament honoree Tyler Brown. Caitlin Meyer added 31 assists while Brown had 21 digs.

IWU received 12 kills apiece from Burkman and Brown against Emory (2-1) while all-tourney pick Kyleigh Block and Meyer each had 24 assists. Jessica McCall had 27 digs.

Golf team rained out: The first round of the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titan Classic at Oshkosh Country Club was postponed due to rain after a few holes.

The IWU women's golf team will complete round one and play round two on Sunday.

HEARTLAND

Women's soccer wins: Five goals by Alexa Valencia-Corona powered the Heartland women's soccer team to a 7-2 season-opening victory over visiting Oakton.

Also scoring for the Hawks were Natalia Carneiro and Jenny Felix, who had three assists. Other assists came from Lauren Yuhas and Alli Moss. Heartland keeper Jackie Robson had 19 saves.

Hanna Shekari and Gabriella Balso scored for Oakton.
