Illinois Wesleyan shot a 295 total Thursday, the day's third low score, in the NCAA Division Men's Golf Championships and moved up from 15th to a tie for ninth place at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The Titans have a 54-hole total of 909 heading into Friday's final round. Wittenberg took over first place with an 887 total, followed by Guilford (889) and Huntingdon (890).
IWU freshman Jonathan Nocek shot a team-best 1-under-par Thursday and is tied for 32nd with a 226 total. Junior Conner O'Neil is tied for 17th after a 72-222.
Eleven headed to NCAA track prelims: Eleven Illinois State men’s and women’s track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, on May 25-27.
Seven ISU women will be hoping to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Senior Morgan Keller is qualified in the shot put and discus, and will be joined in the shot put by Missouri Valley Conference outdoor champion Brandy Thomas. MVC outdoor champion Sydney Laufenberg of ISU also is in the discus.
Amanda McClain will compete in the long jump, MVC Freshman of the Year D’Jenne Egharevba in the 100-meter dash, Rayanne Wright in the 800 and Demetria Anderson in the 100 hurdles.
On the men's side, MVC Freshman of the Year Derrius Rodgers will compete in the 100 and 200. Jack Anstey is entered in the 800, Jaylen McConico in the 110 hurdles and Anthony McRoberts in the high jump and triple jump.
Baseball wins in regional: Ethan Copeland and Tyler McHolland each had four hits to lead Heartland's baseball team to a 14-9 victory over Lewis & Clark in the first round of the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament at Springfield.
Copeland drove in four runs and McHolland three as the Hawks collected 15 hits. Ty Ramirez pitched the first six innings and got the win.
