Kaylee Martin's 25 kills powered Northern Illinois to a four-set victory over Illinois State in nonconference volleyball action Tuesday night at DeKalb.
Meg Wolowicz added 11 kills for the Huskies, who downed ISU, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 33-31. Chandler Kinley paced the winners with 44 assists.
Jaelyn Keene had a team-high 13 kills for ISU (4-6). Ali Line added eight kills, while Machayla Leonard and Sydney Holt had seven each.
The Redbirds were topped by Stef Jankiewicz's 26 assists and Courtney Pence's 14 digs. Northern Illinois had a .240 hitting percentage to ISU's .179.
Burry shares 4th in tourney: Illinois State senior golfer Zach Burry finished in a fourth-place tie out of 102 players in the Badger Invitational at Madison, Wis.
Burry fired a 3-under-par 69 (35-34) in the final round at the par-72, 7,259-yard University Ridge Golf Course to finish with a career-low 54-hole score of 8-under-par 208 (72-67-69). Texas A&M’s Chandler Phillips claimed medalist honors with a 12-under-par 204 (66-70-68).
For the tournament, Burry had 16 birdies. The Redbirds took ninth place in the 16-team field, shooting a final-round 289 to finish at 876. Texas A&M won the title with a 25-under-par 839.
Volleyball team triumphs: The IWU volleyball team downed the University of Chicago (5-2) at Shirk Center, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.
Tyler Brown paced the Titans (4-4) with 17 kills on .485 hitting. She also had 16 digs. Rachel Burkman added 12 kills and 12 digs. Caitlin Meyer provided 41 assists. Jessica McCall was the dig leader with 17.
Earlier Tuesday, IWU's Brown and Meyer were selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Players of the Week.
A junior outside hitter from Normal West, Brown averaged 3.71 kills and 4.18 digs per set as the Titans went 3-1 last week. She had 17 kills, two aces and 13 digs in a five-set win over Washington (Mo.) along with 17 kills, two aces and 21 digs in a four-set win over Ohio Northern. She added 16 kills, one ace and 19 digs against Aurora as well as 13 kills and 18 digs in a sweep of DePauw.
A freshman setter, Meyer averaged 10.53 assists per set for a total of 179 assists over four matches last week.
CCIW honors Leishman: IWU's Cassie Leishman and Carthage’s Kelsey Dejno were selected as the CCIW Soccer Players of the Week.
A senior defender, Leishman helped the Titans go 2-1-0 last week. She scored her team’s final goal off an assist from Jordan Ellerbrock during a 3-0 shutout of Benedictine. Her header during a 1-0 shutout of Franklin prevented a game-tying goal in the second half.
Dejno scored three goals on three shots for the 2-1-0 Lady Reds last week.
Soccer cancellation: The Eureka College men's soccer match scheduled for Wednesday on the new FieldTurf at McKinzie Field against Robert Morris-Springfield has been canceled. The first soccer match at McKinzie Field will be at 7 p.m. Thursday when the Eureka College women host Lincoln Christian.
