WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Illinois State sophomore Trent Wallace fired a 4-under-par 68 on Monday and is tied for second place after the first round of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional Golf Tournament at Purdue University's Kampen Golf Course.

Wallace and Edoardo Lipparelli of Illinois are a stroke behind UNLV's John Oda heading into Tuesday's second round. The 54-hole tournament ends Wednesday.

Competing as an individual after winning his second straight Missouri Valley Conference title, Wallace had six birdies and two bogeys on the 7,411-yard Kampen Course. Wallace shot 3-under-par 33 on the front nine and got to 5-under after a birdie on No. 14 before suffering a bogey on the 18th.

UNLV is the team leader after shooting a 287 total. Illinois and New Mexico are a stroke behind in the 13-team field.

The low five teams and the low individual not on one of those teams advances to the NCAA Championships on May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove.
