SUGAR GROVE — After a hot start, Illinois State sophomore Trent Wallace shot even-par 72 in Saturday's second round of the NCAA Division I Championship at Rich Harvest Farms.
Wallace is tied for 62nd place with a 1-over total of 145 through 36 holes. Individual leader Scottie Scheffler of Texas shot a second straight 68 to sit at 8-under with four players one stroke behind.
Wallace started his round on the back nine with three straight birdies. He countered bogeys on Nos. 13 and 15 with birdies at Nos. 17 and 2, but a bogey on the par-4 fourth and a double on the 562-yard seventh moved him back to even for the day.
“Trent played beautifully today, but just didn't get much out of his round,” said ISU coach Ray Kralis said. “A couple swings proved costly, but he hit so many great shots from which he can build on going into tomorrow. He is within a couple shots of the cut number, so it is well within his reach.”
Illinois sat in third place in the team standings with a 565 total, three behind UNLV and two in back of Oklahoma with Auburn and Vanderbilt tied for fourth at 566.
Illini junior Dylan Meyer shot a 5-under 67 to lead the team with a 138 total, placing him in a tie for sixth among individuals.
