Valley honors Stanton, Razo: Illinois State baseball players Kyle Stanton and Chris Razo received Missouri Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, on Monday.
Stanton batted .550 as Illinois State went 4-1 last week. Included was a five-RBI game against Illinois Wesleyan. Stanton drove in 11 runs for the week with four doubles, one walk and four runs scored.
Razo fired his fourth complete game of the season in a 9-2 win over Creighton. The senior right-hander limited the Bluejays to one earned run and two hits with eight strikeouts. He is 6-0 and lowered his earned run average to 1.21.
ISU returns to action Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Evansville at Duffy Bass Field.
Softball seeded third: ISU’s softball team is the No. 3 seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament this week at Omaha, Neb.
The Redbirds (28-19) open at 6:35 p.m. Thursday against the winner of a 1:35 p.m. game between No. 6 seed Missouri State and No. 7 Evansville.
Creighton is the top seed in the single-elimination tournament, which includes semifinals Friday and the 5:07 p.m. title game Saturday.
Russell all-tourney: Former ISU guard Jamie Russell was named to the all-tournament team this past weekend after she helped the NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars to three wins at Nan’an City in the first leg of their nine-game tour of China.
Russell scored a team-high 11 points in a 58-57 win over China. Her basket with 1:50 left provided the margin of victory. She also had five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
The former Redbird later had five points, four rebounds and three steals in a win over Australia, followed by six points, two rebounds and three steals in a victory over Brazil.
